Exactly. Think about where we were in 2003, it is a totally different team and era. Too be honest, teams tend to have a 5 year cycle. The 2005 Champions League team had pretty much disbanded by 2010, and the 2001 Treble team was gone by 2005 ect.
    *Except Michael, who died.

If everything goes well we could just as well be challenging for fourth next season and who knows, the season after maybe we could challenge 3rd or 2nd.

Brendan is slowly winning me over, the team is showing progress and a sense of direction so things are looking up for me at least.
      * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

We won't the win the league next season however with the right signings this summer I could see us being were Spurs are right now which is battling with City/Chelsea for 2/3rd place, at the very least I expect us to be fighting for 4th from the first day of next season.
However the worst case scenario is that we do a repeat of summer 2011 and fail to capitalise on a promising 4 month run of form and waste a fortune on the wrong players, everything will be dependent on the transfer window IMO.

          This.

It's slightly embarrassing to talk about us winning the league next year to be honest, it's exactly what the scum fans claim we do and we're just feeding into it.

We need progression both on and off the field to be maintained at a good and steady rate, players in and out as well as sponsorship deals and stadium issues.

We need to get the balance between bringing in young players with players that are ready now, Arsenal are the perfect example of this, by the time the players develop to a good enough level the better players have already moved on out of frustration.

At the moment we're a step or 2 behind Tottenham but if we operate very well we can close that gap as early as this summer IMO. I'd settle for a CB, an attacking player and cover at LB this summer. Then go forward replacing departing players which could be, Reina, Skrtel, Agger, Downing, Allen/Henderson or the unthinkable Suarez.

There is no reason to think we can't win the league. We can, it's just very unlikely.

It is unlikely we will sign three players that will prove to be a revelation in the way players like Hyypia and Alonso were. It is very difficult to sign players of immense as yet undiscovered talent, who will slot into the PL and play in it like they'd been in this league for years.

This summer we are in the market for I think three defenders. I suspect at least two of the three will be young defenders from the continent. Having seen how long it took Agger and Skrtel to settle, it would be folly to think we will be rock solid at the start of next season - which we'd need to be. But it isn't impossible.

Sometimes things just click and before you know it a run of wins has gone on the board. Finish this season strongly and the team will go into next season with a belief they can win games on the bounce again. If we got lucky in the market and improved our squad, then why not put in a good season.

But it's all about those players being good enough, that they settle quickly, and that of course we get lucky. Allied to the hope that another team doesn't rack up ten wins on the spin.

It is all unlikely, but it is not impossible. But then neither is it impossible that we'd just launder around mid table after a bad summer of business in the market.
            Forwards.......

As that may be the case, its made even more unlikely by the fact United, Chelsea, Tottenham and City would all have to become weaker or stand still which I don't think is possible. Or very likely.

We also lack the winning mentality that it takes to win a title, it'll take time. We COULD fluke it, but in a league ran by Fergie? No chance.

Even in a team with Champions League and FA cup winners in we couldn't quite do it.

A manager that had won La Liga, UEFA cup, FA cup, Champions League. It was too much.

We were unlucky at times but mostly a lack of experience in that environment cost us. Unless you throw an £££ at it, it takes time.

Phil 'The tan man' Brown reckons we could win the title next season anyway.

He said this morning, that with the football BR has us playing, Suarez, and if we sign 5, just 5 top players in the summer, we can iho do it.

I reckon if Wigan signed 11 top players they could rival us.

I wonder who he'd count as 'top player'

My guess is.. Messi, Ronaldo, Bale, Iniesta, Wilshere

                        OR

Crouch, Barton, Huth, Green and Holt.

I honestly think that's the limit of the average British manager when it comes to players. Didn't Shearer say something like he'd never heard of Cazorla before?

Carra's off this year, Gerrard and Pepe have got five years left tops, so in the next five years we're gonna lose a LOT of our best players, whether it be through transfers or retirements, and we'll be at square one again. Look at 2009. Right after we finished 2nd, we lost Sami, Xabi and Arbeloa, and finished 7th the following season. It'll come to the point that unless we can start getting some serious, serious world beating talent, we're gonna end up rebuilding our squad from scratch, and then starting from the bottom to work our way up. Look at what Shankly did. Sacked off 24 players and rebuilt from the ground, bought a **** load of boss players, and it still took him five years to get promoted and win the first division.
Sorry, but that's rubbish. We've already started rebuilding the squad and will continue to do so as an ongoing process.

If we don't get ourselves into the champions league and in contention for the cups in the near future all our best players will be looking to move on and we'll never progress. Even with as well as spurs have done lately Modric wasn't willing to wait, Bale will probably go next.

All very well saying we have to be patient, it might take 4 years but I doubt any of our most promising players will be willing to hang around for too long while we sort ourselves out.

At the very least we need to qualify for the champions league during next season, if for nothing more than the money element so we can progress the team more quickly.

That was IMO down to very bad owners. With Rafa in charge and better owners then we would have won the league at least once in the Rafa era.

Now we have better owners. Not mega rich owners but they back the manager.

If we don't deliver good enough results then the manager can't blame anyone else than himself.

One of the reasons to why so many of us miss Rafa is because he never got a fair chance to win the league.

It is a very tough task to win the league next season but not impossible.

The key this summer will be to keep Suarez. He is one of the best players in the world and players will IMO want to join us because of that reason, to play together in the same team as Suarez.

They know as long as he play we can win against any team in the league, home and away.

Arn, the season we finished 2nd Rafa was given the chance to win it and we were the best side in the league, we didn't maybe to much too soon but he certainly had the chance to do so.
