In the short term the EL does bring an extra trophy to compete with but taking it seriously is a drain on the squad and compared to the CL or places in the PL the benefits are not huge unless you win the thing.

I honestly think that the owners want to know that in the long run we will be in the CL and perhaps competing for the league. Getting in someone like Rodgers always suggested that they want to build long term and were willing to take a somewhat bumpier road if necessary.

I'm not a huge fan of the way Rodgers talks to the media but on this occasion I really struggle to think it is a particularly harmful opinion to hold.
I think that FSG signed up Rodgers because he can build up the squad and is good developing young players.

I'm not that sure he is the long term solution. He got a three year deal and if he hasn't made enough progress after the second season then it won't be that expensive to sack him.

If he make enough progress after the second season then he will IMO get a new deal.

Next season will be the important season. Progress means new deal. No progress and he will be sacked IMO.

I also believe that top four is a must next season or else he will be sacked. It will of course be very difficult but far from impossible.

The problem is if we finish 7th or worse, that would mean we have regressed since Kenny as at least we won a trophy last season & made the FA Cup final.
Based on the "facts" as one of our great managers used to say, surely Rodgers should get at least the same treatment as a club legend?
      Thoughts?
Thanks for the memories Rafa - YNWA!

I believe this season is the building season. It is next season Rodgers must deliver.

If we finish in seventh place or something like that next season then there is simply no way that he won't be sacked.

The other option is of course that FSG have already decided to sack him but I doubt that.

ye got to agree, a bit of damping down expectations. A little worrying really, but to be expected.
It's a prediction thread on a wish list.

My initial thought is that those were never likely to be the sole metrics of progression in BR's first season. Building a platform to give us a good trajectory going forwards were more important than achieving an improved mediocrity in the short term.

Of course it's up for debate whether we have done that sufficiently, or indeed whether Dalglish really failed to do that, but I think the point is that to look at things in the terms you present in isolation would be a rather dim approach.

I'm with you on this. Brendan is being a lunn . What if we finish really low in the league anyway? Without Europa games, we could potentially end up playing just 40 competitive games. The EL is great as you can field some of your fringe players. Personally, I think he is only saying this as he knows we aint gonna get a place anyway.

He does not need to say anything. Why comment on it? He just likes the sound of his own voice too much for my liking and it sometimes gets quite irritating.

I might be going out on one here, but I suspect he may have been asked about European qualification. Think some people just over-react every time he says something.

He hasn't actually said anything majorly wrong. But it hasn't stopped people throwing the toys out of the pram. Rather than him talking lots, part of the problem maybe highly strung fans who just want a hissy fit every other day (not aimed at you)

I am torn on the Europa to be honest. Thursday nights were handy but Sunday afternoons is a pain in the arse....

I would like to see us qualify for the Europa but at the same time i would want to see a lot of the younger players play in it.... a team like:

                                --------------------JONES-----------------------

                                WISDOM-----KELLY--------SKRTEL----ROBINSON

                                -----------------ALLEN-------------------------

                                -------------TEXACO-----SHELVEY--------------

                                SUSO----------ZE GERMAN------------IBE-------

                                Would be grand

Chances are we'd be knocked out in the group stages but it would be good for the development of the young playas
