Take a moment to have a look at @everydaysexism on twitter. It is a project where people worldwide are sharing their experiences of everyday sexism and it really is quite an eye-opener.
The vast majority of the submissions are from women and they range from rude and ill-mannered behaviour to illegal stuff like being groped on public transport or lewd comments being shouted in the street. I was quite shocked because firstly it would never occur to me to behave that way and secondly, how many (effectively) sex-offenders go unpunished.
I'm not equating the comments on this thread with that kind of behaviour but I'm guessing that the people making them are not aware of what their sisters, daughters, wives, girlfriends etc etc are having to endure.
