He's defo playing much better recently.

Wish goalies would stop mugging themselves off v Hazard's pens though and falling in to his trap. Easily said on here I know but Yakubu was exactly the same, waits for the keeper, rolls it in the other side and looks like a cool genius. Didnt look so great when goalies finally cottoned on though, he was out of his comfort zone when the usual trick didnt work and started missing, even Brad Jones sussed it!!

Difference is that Hazard looks where he wants to put it and strides up to take it. But if the keeper moves to that side he places it in the other side. When the keeper is static he sticks to the original place and puts it far enough in the corner out the keepers reach.

I'd imagine the best idea is to do a late feint to the side he's looking at and then go the other way. You wouldn't get all the way across to the side, but as he's done a late shift in his aim he unlikely put it right in the corner anyway.

        On Mignolet;

He's just not a sweeper keeper. And never will be. But when he sticks to what he's good at he is a good, solid traditional Keeper.

It'd be nice to have a keeper sweeping things up and having good distribution with the feet. Those attributes make a good keeper a great one in the modern game. 11 outfield players is the way to go. But I think since his time out there's been an acceptance that in that area he's limited. The three at the back mean more passing options in the build up from the back and have limited the need for him to kick it. As a result, all he has to do is concentrate on the basics and he's looking much better.

It'd be nice if he could claim a ball being shepherded back by a defender. But if he sticks on his line and the balls booted out for a throw in, tbh I can live with that if the basics are fine. I don't want a mix up where we don't know if he's coming or going. That's when mistakes and goals happen. He was quick enough off his line when he needed to be last night when the responsibility was all on him. For me, that's good enough.

We obviously need better than Brad Jones as back up. The manager knows that. In the summer we can look at things but until then I think Mignolet has ensured we don't need to pay over the odds right now. The defence is settled so let's leave it that way.

I can accept him not being a sweeper and not being great with distribution.

But he does need to command his area better and improve decision making when coming out or sticking to his line for corners and crosses.
Those should be basics for a keeper.

3 clean sheets in last three away games, not matched since 2008. That to me shows he's improving in all aspects. He made one cock up v Villa, but countered that with a match winning save v Benteke and a host of brilliant clearances from crosses coming in.

As I've already said, for me he has improved the basics.

Yeah but that rush of blood vs Villa shows he's still got those moments in him, he got away with that one. Moments like that can happen to most keepers at times but we still need to see far less of them from Mig in the long run.

the distribution thing might be less of an issue now we have three CBs as we can play the ball quickly across the backline and go up either wing. both sakho and the adonis can both make fast incisive passes or carry the ball forward.

if he was playing as a sweeper he will be closed down and revert to panic mode. his confidence will be shot.
i wish we could send him out for some strength/aggression training. hes just like a big pussy.

He continued making important saves for the first half of his first season and it was not until the City game in December 2013 that there was a costly mistake of note.

The second half of last season did see him make some errors, but he made more point protecting saves last season than he made errors that cost points. He certainly did not start his Liverpool career in a poor fashion though.
Maybe badly is a bit harsh but I've never been happy with his decision-making coming off his line, not from the very beginning. His shot-stopping saves don't make up for that as it creates further panic in the defence generally.

I don't like running our players down but he's a hazard coming off his line and his distribution isn't great either, his kicking is poor. I'll be surprised if he's our number one next year, there are too many deficiencies for him to work on.

He'll do to the end of this season though on present form

Ideally we sign a good all rounder in the summer and Migsy can be the back-up (depending on how big his wages are and how they fit in to the club's wage structure)
