I thought he was great on Mnday night. There were a couple of times he came to get crosses where an attacker was trying to head it in front of him - I just looked at the net by default but to be fair to him he caught them all

DeGea is a great keeper in front of a flakey defence.

that's the thing with him - we all still expect the **** up to come so if he keeps this level of performance up then we are on a winner.

Their back line has conceded the second least number of goals this season. Jose's 10 man back line is a lot of things, but with only 25 goals against them in the league, flakey is not one of them.

it may well be their defence is a bit ****e and degea keeps pulling off worldie saves to keep them ****s going. and thats why madrid want him.

we need an improved defence AND a better keeper. if available.

They also made the point that if we had signed him new in Jan we'd all be raving about him. His history suggests the next **** up is just around the corner but if he keeps this up then the new Mignolet is a top keeper!
That is a really good point.

Personally, i think that Mignolet can be improved on. However, i don't think it is the most important signing we need to prioritize in the summer. We could spend a lot of money on someone like Frazier Forster or Jordan Pickford but I don't think it will make a difference if our defenders can't defend set pieces. I think a center back and a defensive midfielder will make a difference.

Also, i don't think Klopp has given up on Karius being the long term #1 either.

he really isnt nasty enough, good goalies have that crazy aggression that makes the rest of the defense **** themselves so they dont **** up.

He's improving in recent times to be fair to him, credit where it is due. IMO we should loan Karius out and still get in a top keeper. Let them battle it out for top spot. We cannot afford to be caught out in this position again next season.

All credit to Mignolet for his upturn in form. But if the last 6 weeks hadn't happened then nigh on every single person here would want a keeper as a relatively high priority. Is 6 weeks of good form really enough to dispel years of being not quite at the level we want? Very willing to accept he could maintain this form, but it's also possible he returns to his previous level. It's an important position and if there is an opportunity for a top keeper we should take it and dispense with Karius, win-win.

I guess the question is whether we have only realised a longer term improvement in the last six weeks. His style seems to be very different now - his aggressive punching is a real revelation.

I think the question is could we identify an available top keeper. If we were going to get a Courtois/De Gea/Cech level player then I'd be all for it. If not then I think the fact that Klopp and his staff have transformed Mingolet should be used as a motivating factor for Karius and we should concentrate on other areas.

On a more general note, there was an interesting article (https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/exc...111214429.html) about the guy behind much of Monaco's recruitment. He seems convinced a big issue for English clubs is the quality of fullbacks.

Who would people here like to see as a replacement?

A realistic replacement that is. We are not going to get a Neuer or a De Gea.

I would also suspect that the likes of Oblak would be out of reach as I think if he left Atletico Madrid then it would be to one of the silly money clubs in terms of both transfer fee and wages.

ter Stegan I really like as a keeper, but would Barca sell him?

Timo Horn is a good keeper but my own feeling is that he has a lot of the flaws that Karius has (flaws that should and could improve for both with experience), but I don't thnk his potential ceiling is higher than that of Karius.

For me, I would go to Schalke and try for Ralf Fahrmann.

He seems a very good keeper who is a strong all rounder. He is experienced but should have years left in him at the top level. He is big unit at 6'5 or 6'6, but is agile and uses every inch of his frame. But what I like most about him is that he often makes the decisions for the back line by coming out for the ball. By that I mean he is very could at opening up his body and getting a block in be it with his foot, shoulder, chest or any part he can use to stop the ball.

He reminds me very much of Schmeichel or Kahn in how he comes out and gets blocks in.

Another strength he seems to have in spades is his ability not to switch off during spells in which he has little to do. He seems to be able to maintain focus and not switch off during games. Might seem a simple thing but a lot of keepers get caught napping for a split second but Fahrmann seems to be switched on all the time during games.

Obviously you're free to discuss what you like, but this really is academic, Klopp won't sign a keeper this summer. Not happening.

I think Mingolet has been class for a good few games now.

His command of his box has come on so much.

He could be on the precipice of a Lucas style changing of people's opinions.
