I think over work can and I guess there has to be a judgement but at the beginning of the season a lot of teams seem ring rusty and playing games seems to be the only way to get rid of that. I'd rather we got the players challenging for the first team fully fit and then worry about over work/resting players as the season progresses.

If I remember correctly did people not frequently criticise Rafa for not playing more young/fringe players in the early rounds of the cup? We definitely peaked later in the season under him, which would suggest that it is possible to manage the fatigue from early games (we had CL games as well then).
