Can't remember when we last had an easy start to the season.....

I think looking at our current level we could be 2-3 years away from being in the right league position come march time. Then we need to get over the final 8 games with massive pressure attached, pressure that none of the current sqaud have ever had to deal with. I fear we may need to fall at the wire in order to be able to come back knowing more about what it takes to make the final step.

We Really need at least three of JP, MG, FA, GB, DA, GP and DK settling in and having a big impact on our level of ability and results. HK, XA, SG, JC, PR, SF, PC will also have to be on top of their game to over-haul chelski. By the way, I think hell will freeze over before utd win the title with that squad, watch them burn and fade in the spring! But that's another matter altogether.

That said after winning the european cup in his first season with a shocking, poor squad you could never rule out it happening sooner. But I i would say at least 2-3 years, maybe 4 or 5....

I'm still convinced that it will happen under Rafa, we may even find that we win number 6 before number 19... His credentials speak for themselves. I struggle to believe he won't translate his Spanish league successes

there are various factors to consider in the comparison

winesoak took 5 1/2 years to assemble the "best" team in the league and a further year to get them to win - in a large part through the aquisition of the french ponce.

an ABSOLUTELY KEY further factor was a long term psychological and media campaign to influence officials. this started out in the spring of 1998 with the infmous "choking on their vomit" comment at anfield and a similar diatribe against mr brian hill for having the temerity to be impartial in a home cup tie. At first winesoak made himself look foolish, but gradually and with the backing of the manc-based newspaper media, his campaign bore fruit and in the next decade, his team enjoyed the most indulgent and favourable officiating ever seen in domestic english football. hes still at his tricks but his act has worn thin over many years.

dont get me wrong, lfc is some way from having a title winning team: 2 wide midfielders, a right back and a keeper at the very least, but even if we had those position nailed down, we will not be champions again without that little extra from lady luck and from referees. rafa is a class act but sometimes i worry that his class stops him gaining us that 1% in the "mind games" stakes

Just seems like we've been a team 'in transition' forever.

Need to stick with a performing 11 - no point of encouraging the players to 'fight' for their place when rotation will let them on anyway.

Too many players not worthy of the shirt I'm afraid.
Not going to win it with this squad.

I assume when you wrote 1998 you meant 1988. That's 18 years ago - wow, you really don't let things go, do you?
            .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Fair enough. It was a lighthearted comment - I thought I detected a degree of hostility to "winesoak" dating back some eighteen years at least.

I certainly admire your knowledge. I bet you didn't even have to look up the ref's name, did you?

a "nice guy" wouldnt have achieved what he has

to be honest, i try not to take much notice of referees. mr hill is the same guy who refd the cup final wimbledon and disallowed beardsleys goal so he should stick in the minds of all lfc fans who followed us back then. as it goes he wasnt a bad ref and that decision at wembley was technically correct (at that time)

winesoaks latest comment on poll being the best referee i n the league is more of the same: imo poll is the worst referee in the history of top league football. not that he lacks the skills just in the way he conducts himself, spoils games, seeks out controversial decisions and LIES about it in the media afterwards. i think he should be in another occupation for footbals sake. i dont want referees to be "characters". i want them to be less obtrusive and more conistent and i think by giving them technology to help them make difficult calls, wed be taking a step forward.

I used to like the idea of having more assistant refs but I've gone off it because that would just create more of them.

I have tried to wipe the previously open sore of Wembley '88 from my memory, with a fair degree of success I might add.
