Are the current Liverpool team carrying Gerrard...?

Btw, does anyone remember how well Lucas did when Gerrard was out injured last Christmas? We smashed Spurs 5-0 and were very unlucky v City and I think Chelsea. Controlled both games for the most part.

But we were also great under Gerrard in the same system. I think it was evident last year that the whole key to our strength was Suarez / Sturridge / Sterling. Also, notice how our best came when Sterling stepped up a level? Three top attacking players at their best. Hopefully we'll better with Balo / Raheem & Studge.

He did quite well and on that form I would have no problem playing him DM now. Sadly he hasn't looked the same since that January injury though, although the team did evolve when he was out and the system hasn't really suited him since he came back.

Henderson's strengths would be negated if asked to mainly sit and protect the back four. He's not a DM. We need a specialist....Rodgers hasn't bought one since he got the job. Not one!

I don't know much about Can and I can't comment too much on him as a player but to me he seems close to what a DM is in the short time he's been here so I think it's safe to say BR bought him in to play in this position and sees him as a long term replacement for Gerrard - that's just my thoughts.

I do think we've missed a trick not going for Alex Song, not sure why we didn't tbh. Yes there are more talented players but he's a big strong lad, can get around the park and is clearly a clever player, plays simple balls and keeps the flow of the game going.

We really should have gone for him while we had the chance.

Can looks like a box to box player to me. Perhaps he could be converted to a DM though as he does have most of the attributes. I still agree with Shaggy that ideally we could do with a specialist DM.

As some-one said above, no-one is carrying Gerrard as they can't carry themselves.
However, at 34 Gerrard shouldn't be an automatic starter because there is no way he is going to play 2/3 games a week and be effective; so wherever he plays he has to be playing second fiddle to some-one else. At the moment though, there is no obvious starter before him in his (current) position. For that reason I would start him further forward and prioritise a defensive mid (along with everyone else), or put Hendo there. Not great use of Hendo, but I think he is a future captain and as such should get used to playing in a few different positions and like I say, prioritise spending there. Of course we could feasibly have played Agger there..

Anyway I don't know, my knowledge of football could be written on the back of a postage stamp; I just think that a 34 yr old is too old to be starting all of the time for an English team - it's rare that they can.
