Fair play to Aston Villa. They were so resilient, so well drilled and so compact, they asked us to go around them and we couldn't. The space between their defence and midfield was minimal and why Coutinho couldn't get into the game. When they had to consider Sterling's pace on the left, it created some space for Coutinho to pull some strings but it was too late. Agbongahlor on Gerrard stiffled our creativity from midfield and Aston Villa's work rate meant we couldn't get in behind.
Ideally we wanted our lone striker to make the runs to stretch that defensive line, but he looked lethargic and a touch lazy. When the ball did stick with Balotelli, he slowed down our attacks and Aston Villa retained their shape.
Let's not forget Villa were time wasting from 85 minutes and we just couldn't break them down. Lambert seems to have Rodgers' number at Anfield, but really it was a bad day at the office for us and Aston Villa put in a shift.
Frustrating, but **** happens. It's Hodgson's fault anyway - ****ing international break.
Wrong team, wrong set up and it was never corrected in the match. It's ok rotating players with the champion's league in mind but the league has to be number one priority or we won't be in it again next year. Rotate them in the CL and stick with the best team and the diamond in the league.
It will take at least 10 games before we get into our rhythm, with the amount of new players we've got. And we've lost Luis, so it's got to affect us short term. We'll be OK. Nothing to be worried about.
