Right we all agree the change of formation has helped our form to pick up. Its certainly made us harder to beat. We have looked good at times. It suits our centre backs and Lucas.
However I'm not convinced its the way to stay, especially now sturridge is back. He likes to drop off, pick the ball up, fanny around and knock it about. He doesn't lead the line particularly well. He's better suited in a two. We want him getting in dangerous positions, I'm not convinced this formation would get the best from him.
Under Evans we played a different system but still with the 3 at back, but the failings were often similar. When the opposition has only one up top, you are effectively having an extra defender on the pitch when it could be another creative player. What you get is lots of passing around the three but not a lot else. Its predictable at times. When you get a team prepared to press like everton it then puts the defenders under more pressure. Like we saw with sakho and can caught dallying.
Ibe and markovic are doing good jobs in an unfamiliar role, however long term it won't do either any favours. We seem to have a number of players that all favour differing systems. I don't think Lucas in the diamond would work as he would be too isolated. None of our defenders work in a 4 very well. Sterling, cout and lallana all prefer central.
I guess the system is here for the foreseeable to get us through if you like, it gives all the weak links extra protection. I just don't think we will ever score enough goals with it.
Perhaps it could be tinkered to on occasion start with two up top. I want to see sturridge and balotelli start together again.
