First half was a shambles and the team selection was wrong. But credit to Rodgers for turning it around in the second half. We never really looked comfortable, but Southampton are a good side and this was always going to be a tough game.
Today was a great example of why we should play a striker. It also highlighted the importance of Sakho and having a proper defensive midfielder in the side. When we pick Allen or Gerrard in that role we get a bit a swamped.
I'm a little amazed we managed to win and keep a clean sheet considering how poor we were for such large stretches of the game and the luck we had we some of the officiating.
Mignolet, who I've been a harsh critic of, was outstanding today. I know there was some controversy over whether he handled it outside the area but a few months ago he wouldn't have got there and they probably would have scored. Fair play to him for improving that side of his game. A break, even a short one, appears to have been just what he needed to sort his head out. He's never going to be good at kicking the ball, but at least now the rest of his game is starting to come together.
Fantastic result against a very good team, credit to Rodgers for the half time substitution, Moreno helped turn the game and we looked a lot more solid down that side.
I'm sooooo happy I can't quite get round to expressing it. Beating West Ham, Spurs and now Southampton while dealing with tricky cup fixtures against Chelsea, Bolton, Besiktas, etc, is crazy stuff. Almost dreamy stuff.
Hopefully Sturridge and Sterling will be fresh to keep Besiktas under the cosh along with Balotelli. And Sakho will have had some enforced rest.
We rode our luck first half but I thought it was a very good, pragmatic performance in the second half. We soaked up the pressure very well and hit them on the break. Similar to some of the Euro performances under Rafa. This is a sign that this team is evolving.
