Can needs to be back in defence. He ran out of steam badly second half in the middle. We'll get more out of him for longer in defence.

I think pace will be important in this one so I would like to see us start Sturridge, Sterling and Ibe, I'd like to see Can and Henderson in centre mid. I'd also like to see Balotelli come off the bench for half an hour or so as hopefully he will be really up for this one (but hopefully not so up for it that he's likely to see red )

Philippe Coutinho is available to face Manchester City tomorrow but Liverpool will have to assess Jordan Henderson for the clash, Brendan Rodgers reported today.

Neither midfielder travelled to Turkey in midweek for the Reds' Europa League second leg against Besiktas, which was lost on penalties at the Ataturk Stadium.

Coutinho can line up against the reigning Barclays Premier League champions on Sunday lunchtime, however, though Rodgers' squad may otherwise be largely unchanged.

"It's going to be similar to what we had the other night," the boss said at his pre-match press conference today. "Young Phil Coutinho will be fine. But the rest will be as it was really.

"We'll assess one or two of the boys that have been out, like Jordan Henderson. We'll have a look at Jordan and see how he is."

It was a gruelling and ultimately disappointing night for Liverpool on Thursday as a second-half strike from Besiktas forced extra-time in their last 32 tie.

No further goals demanded a penalty shootout to decide the game, with Dejan Lovren the unfortunate man to miss with the Reds' fifth spot-kick.

A late arrival back on Merseyside after the match means a rapid turnaround before tackling City, but the manager insisted it is an encounter to be relished.

He explained: "The players that we had available were nearly all involved the other night. Of course it was always going to be difficult in terms of the preparation.

"You don't need to be a sports scientist to work out that if you arrive back at 4.30 on Friday morning and then you have got a game early on the Sunday, physically there is going to be a cost.

"But mentally, the players are in a good state and we'll look forward to the game."

Daniel Sturridge clocked up 105 minutes at the Ataturk before being withdrawn for Rickie Lambert ahead of the second half in extra-time.

Discussing the reasoning behind the switch today, Rodgers outlined why the prolific striker still requires careful management following a lengthy lay-off.

"We just have to manage Daniel," he said. "He had given everything in the game. This is a player that is coming back from five months out injured, someone who is gaining his fitness in the games.

"We have to be really careful that he doesn't break; Daniel's history shows that he has got a past in terms of injuries. So we have to try to manage that the very best we can.

"There has been very little training between the games because they have to play, recover and then play again.

"He had given everything, he had no more left in his legs and we just needed to take him off to prevent him getting an injury while he was very tired."

I'd be tempted to start Sturridge on the bench tbh after reading that. Ppl say we need pace but what about using the pace to run onto Lamberts flick ons & nod downs? Bring Studge on when there's tired legs.

I'm also in the Sturridge as a sub camp. He didn't look right at all on Thursday.

Saying that, neither did Lallana or Sterling.

If Johnson is fit I'd try him at RWB and play Markovic, Cout and Sterling as the front 3. I never thought I'd want to see Johnson play again to be honest but the RWB role might be good for him.

I hope I never see Johnson in our shirt again personally. Been off the boil for a long time & we need much better than he can offer I feel.

I hate Johnson, but if Ibe's injured and I think Sturridge won't be fit to start then there aren't many options. I'd give him a try and prey.

Markovic has been really good there though, can't see where Johnson would be an improvement. He's too slow to cover the whole right side too and will end up needing a drag on Anderson's oxygen tank

I could be rong but I was assuming Johnson had been pushed into the right sided CB (when he has played) because he isn't able to get up and down the pitch like he used to. The RWB role would have suited Johnson at his peak but probably not as much now.

Yeah I'd have Markovic in ahead of Johnson any day of the week. I'd even have Manquilo in ahead of him even though he's still got to improve his final ball. I think he can improve it but this isn't a game for the youngster.

If Henderson cannot play I think it will be the same back 5 as Thursday.

If he can play, pray pray pray, I hope it will be Henderson for Lovren with Can moving back into defense.

I'm worried about the from 5 (I'm counting the wing backs as part of the front).

I think Sturridge will be on the bench, I think Ibe will too and possibly even Sterling.

Coutinho will defo start, probably Lallana and Moreno.

Markovic will almost definitely start but I hope not as a wingback because he's suspect in defensive duties. That's probably where he will be though.

                              Lallana Coutinho
