FWIW.......while I can understand all the pining etc for him given the game yesterday, I really don't give him much thought at all. He's ancient ****ing history, and beyond putting in a real shift to keep his thread in the General Football section going by being complete ****e since he left, the whole 'missing him' lark is something I cannot grasp.

We got the best years of his career, but he stopped being that truly world-class striker a while before he left us, and probably keeping him around would have been poison to the team's development. People can point to reasons why he lost his form/love for the game etc,....but I prefer to think of him as something that worked out well for us, but was past his best before date and was disposed of.

      Like a cumrag.

I agree to be fair. Certainly not pining for him, him in his prime with Suarez and Gerrard in their primes would've been awesome but their primes didn't overlap. We didn't know that at the time though

I just felt it was time for everyone to move on, remember the good times and give him a welcome as thanks for those. Or at the very least if you can't cheer him, don't boo him. Glad he got that.

That's fair enough.........I wouldn't have been booing him myself for yesterday's game, but I'd no issue with some of the 'pantomime' hatred directed towards him whenever he lined up against us in competitive stakes, with Agger's smash becoming the stuff of legend (and I doubt many Liverpool fans would suggest otherwise).
Soundbites, of which there are plenty from yesterday, are all well and good, but it's ultimately actions that define us, and he has to live with the direction his career took through his own. It was a light-hearted occasion, and he was among friends, his individual playing career went to pieces and he's back in his homeland, so I'm not wholly surprised by the goodwill extended towards him.
But for me, he's just irrelevant, if that's the right term to use.....he was well paid for his time, he scored goals for us, we got good money for him, he's no use anymore etc

I don't wallow in the corner remembering Barnes' or Rush's goals, so this lad would have a fair mountain to climb for that to happen - fair ****s to him though for supplying the comedy for his time at Chelsea though.

Can't stand that lad though.......never could. Cannot understand how anyone could pay the money for him. I know people bring up Carroll etc as the worst 'big' signing, but this one was worse for me - it's like no-one involved had bothered to watch his career beforehand.

I interviewed Ryan Babel recently and he told me he was “numb from all the empty promises” the club constantly made. You’d get told one thing, commit, and encounter the opposite of what was offered. Nando related that story when he left. Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano made similar noises.

                    What a great article.

I 'forgave' him ages ago. I read an article with him a while back, and he came across as a really decent bloke it was hard not to warm to him.

Looking back at those goals the one thing that sticks out is he scored some big goals in big games for us. I'd say that was the one difference between he and Suarez, who would play well in big games but didn't always find the net.

Saurez is the best player I have ever seen in red, Fernando the best Centre Forward.

What a partnership they could have been.

                    Modifying post.

Good way of putting it. Torres was the best number 9 in the world at the time.

I always hoped he would realise his mistake and come back after a year or two, find his form again, score goals and everyone would be happy. The longer it went though, the more it became apparent that his ability was in terminal decline and he would never be back here, physically or in ability. I was nowhere near as bothered by Suarez leaving as I was Torres, he was definitely the last player I was annoyed or distracted by leaving Liverpool. The thing I learned after he left was that there's always someone else who comes along, it was Suarez for us! (Not Andy Carroll - I was just as furious at the concept of Andy being a replacement for Torres as I was with Torres for leaving!)

Sob. So sad, so, so sad.
                          3rd place. Worst champions ever.

It wasn't so much sadness as anger. Red faced anger. Andy Carroll, ffs.
