Jürgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, has been delivered the first serious blow of his reign with teenage defender Joe Gomez’s season effectively over.

Gomez suffered a serious knee injury during England’s Under 21 international win over Kazakhastan on Tuesday evening, and a scan at a Merseyside hospital has diagnosed anterior cruciate ligament damage. That is likely to mean up to nine months out, preventing the 18-year-old from featuring until the next pre-season.

The full extent of the injury is yet to be confirmed by the club, but Liverpool and Gomez expect the worst. It is a devastating setback for the teenager, who has shone since moving to Liverpool from Charlton during the summer. He started the season in the first team, and although he sat out recent Premier League fixtures as the Brendan Rodgers era came to an end, he was itching to impress the new coach.

Gomez is thought to be in good spirits despite the setback, but it is terrible luck for both him and Klopp as Liverpool prepare for their first game under new management on Saturday.

With Klopp favouring a back four during his management career he is seriously short of defenders capable of playing full-back. Other than Alberto Moreno, only Jose Enrique – ostracised under Rodgers for the last six months – is a recognised left-back with first team experience.

Thursday was Klopp’s first chance to train with the whole squad, minus other injured players such as Jordan Henderson and Christian Benteke. He is buoyed, at least, by the fitness of Philippe Coutinho. Coutinho was unable to join the Brazil squad during the international week but is fit for the weekend. Dejan Lovren is also fit again.

Klopp also has both his trusted lieutenants alongside him following the arrival of his assistant manager Zeljko Buvac.

Bosnian Buvac is another key aide to the German manager, alongside senior coach Peter Krawietz.

The trio formed the same coaching team at Klopp’s former clubs Mainz and Borussia Dortmund.

The first insights into the new training regime have been filtering out through those senior players who did not go on international duty.

Klopp’s approach – as he said in his press conference last Friday – is geared towards maximising the energy levels of his players. In simple terms, they will be required to run more, but there is no compromising the use of the ball in training sessions so far. That remains fundamental to his approach.

It seems to be OK, we were a bit concerned at first but we are hopeful it's nothing too serious.

We can only hope the scan reveals less damage than feared. He might get lucky.

Gutted for him. If anyone recovers well from ACLs though, it's defenders.
