I think that games like this are important for his development he needs to learn how to lead and organise, it would be easy for him to just follow VVD's instruction, but games like this put him in charge and he did well.

Think Keown said something similar just after Milner was taken off. It gave him a chance to take command of the defence, and he did so.

His movement on and off the ball was amazing and he can really ping a pass along the ground or in the air. He should be England's no.1 for the next decade.

I thought it was a toss up between him and Lallana for motm. Looked class and didn’t miss VVD next to him one bit. In fact he maybe grew in stature a bit as he assumed more responsibility being the senior player in defence.
