I don't think he is necessarily 4th choice CB. I don't think there is a clear pecking order of CBs beyond VVD. VVD is first choice but I think the other 3 are probably much of a muchness. Gomez was 4th choice last year because he was still regaining his fitness after injury. Last year Matip seemed to be prefered in the PL and Konate in the CL. A couple of years ago Gomez was being picked ahead of Matip. I think that when everyone is fit it's likely to be VVD + 1.Originally posted by danperkins View PostGomez was unhappy with his lack of playing time & clearly playing at RB isn't his favoured position. He has VVD in front of him who is the best CB in the world, Matip who is one of the best CB's in the prem & Konate who looks like he could be a potential superstar. At RB he has the best player in the world ahead of him there too in Trent, also we just bought a new RB aswell. That leaves Joe as 4th choice CB and competing for that 2nd place spot at the wingback position. I doubt very much whether he will accept that long term & I see him moving on next year. I think it's a smart move for LFC as that English premium holds out well. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Is it a big call though? Before his last injury he was 2nd choice after VVD.
Injury free he has the ability to compete with Matip or Kinate for a starting berth.
Think we are very lucky in that we have VVD and then three guys that if all are fit, all are good enough to be a starter.
We don't really have a 3rd or 4th choice in terms of quality, we have VVD and then three guys who are 2nd choice CB level.
Am trying to think of another team at the top level with that sort of depth of quality at CB and cannot think of a single team that comes close.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Not like you to write an essay or anything mateOriginally posted by Jaco_Pastorious View PostThe only question mark that hangs over Gomez is that of his availibility due to getting a lot of injuries.
Which is the one question mark over Matip as well.
In terms of his ability as a player, there are no question marks over Gomez for me. He is one of the better CBs in the league, he may well be the most talented English CB out there at the moment.
He reads the game well, he is lightning quick, is strong, good on the ball, can bring the ball out from the back, decent to good distributer of the ball, good in a physicial game and good in a technical game. He gets people saying he is poor in the air, which he is not as he wins a good % of aerial duels. He is just not as stand out in the air as the likes of VVD.
He has also shown that he is a very capable stand in at RB. No of course he is not at the level of TAA at RB, but he can play at the level of a good to very good RB and as he showed last seson he has added good crossing and a willingness to go forward from the RB slot to his game.
No brainer to keep Gomez at the club. He stays fit and he is at the level where he can genuinely compete for the spot alongside VVD.
Fantastic "problem" for Klopp to have to have to pick two from VVD, Matip, Konate and Gomez each week and what strength of quality in depth to have two from that foursome as the pairing for cups games and the like.
Gets forgotten about that there have been seasons where Gomez has kept Matip out of the starting line up on form. Gomez can be that good. It generally seems to be a case of whichever one of those two is fit first gets to hold the spot beside VVD. That will change this year with Konate now settled in so it will be a three way fight for that slot though Konate can play in the LCB role and I think he is the long term replacement for VVD on that side imo.
Another thing Gomez brings to the team is he is the one defender we have that can comfortably play at RB, RCB, LCB and LB.
Excellent player that has been terribly unlucky with injuries but, unlike guys like Chamberlain, he still has a lot to offer the team.
He's decent for a squaddie imo & I have zero problems with him being 4th choice CB, if he is content with challenging. For me VVD and Matip are way ahead of him and Konate has been impressive so he has his work cut out for him. I see the 5 year deal a smart one, maybe Gomez kicks on and maybe he doesn't and we can sell him for good money with that new deal signed.
Do I think he has more to offer than Ox? Absolutely who doesn't ffs, but he has some serious flaws in his defensive game that imo are covered up by his pace. Although I thought he actually was ok when playing at RB last season, I hate him there usually. Gomez has an issue with standing off players and giving them too much time and space to work, this is even more evident at RB but in fairness is not his position. I feel he gets bullied at CB too often & I don't think he reads the game well at all, techincally he's ok but it's that recovery pace that is a huge asset for him. Fortunately for us VVD and Konate are lightening too and Matip although ungainly, is no slouch.
So yeah, no issues with having that defensive cover at CB and occasionally covering Trent at RB as Ramsay is raw. I can't see him at LFC long term though, time will tell

I generally try to show a bit of courtesy when disagreeing with someone and give a reponse, albeit oft a mangled attempt at one, as to why I disagree.
