Boss on defence, Dejan and Emre's position

Brendan Rodgers is keen to keep a settled defence after Liverpool chalked up a deserved clean sheet to help start the season with a victory at Stoke City.

The Reds were effective in shutting out the confident Potters at the Britannia Stadium en route to a 1-0 result courtesy of a Philippe Coutinho winner.

With summer signings Nathaniel Clyne and Joe Gomez flanking Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel in a back four, Rodgers’ side were resolute.

And the manager wants to see those standards maintained so that the defensive foundations are laid for his team to then flourish at the other end.

He said: “Having players that are going to be able to play consistently for you is key in any team, and especially in a back five. That’s vital.

“I thought the back four and goalkeeper were excellent last week at Stoke with their organisation as a group and a unit.

“Nathaniel Clyne coming in is a top defender and very rarely gets beaten, is super quick and his covering position for a young player is outstanding.

“There was one moment where the ball is on the far side and he’s got a player outside him but he recognises and smells danger quickly, jumps inside and makes the header away. For a lot of teams, that’s a goal against you.

“We’ve got players that want to defend first and foremost, which is key in keeping clean sheets. Then from that they have the platform to play. That back four last week, I thought, were exceptional.”

On Lovren’s display specifically, Rodgers added: “He was very, very good last week. I think it’s confidence.

“I felt and I think I said it last year that in his second season he will be a better player here. It’s such a huge move to come to a club like this and it’s only when they’re in that they realise and recognise the expectations that are here.

“It was about trying to find that balance early on in pre-season. We have got excellent players here in [Mamadou] Sakho and Kolo [Toure], the central defenders, but centre-halves will tell you it’s about finding that comfort with a partner and that partnership. I thought the two centre-halves were very good last week.

“Dejan is aggressive, he’s good in the air, his reading of the game was good and his passing was simple but effective. I think he’s gained confidence over the pre-season and hopefully that will be maintained.”

When the Northern Irishman switched to a back three last season, the versatile Emre Can was regularly fielded in defence.

The German’s class allowed for a comfortable transition and the signing from Bayer Leverkusen made promising strides in his debut year.

For this campaign, though, Rodgers expects Can to be used in a more traditional midfield role – the position he expressed as his preference upon joining the club.

“He can play and operate in any one of the three positions [in a midfield three],” the boss assessed.

“When I met Emre, and having seen him play in a whole raft of positions, his great attribute is that he’s a footballer and understands the game. Whatever role he’s asked to play, he has this in-built brain for football that allows him to adjust and adapt.

“When I met him, I asked his preferred position, where he sees himself playing – and that was as a controlling midfield player. That’s where I’ve always felt he’ll be an outstanding talent for us.

“He can play in a back three, against Newcastle he played as one of the two centre-halves when we played a back four and was comfortable.

“But I think his passing range, strength and power is best in midfield. Once again he’s finding his fitness and working his way to fitness, then that’s where you’ll see him best.”

BR: Consistency the next step for Coutinho

Philippe Coutinho can take the next step in his career by making contributions such as his winner at Stoke City an even more regular occurrence, according to Brendan Rodgers.

The Brazilian settled the season opener in Liverpool’s favour by spinning into space and blasting a shot from 25 yards past the goalkeeper’s reach into the roof of the net.

Goals from distance have become a theme for the No.10, who struck similarly memorable efforts against Bolton Wanderers, Southampton and Manchester City last season.

As Coutinho gets set to run out at Anfield for the first time in three months, for the visit of Bournemouth tonight, Rodgers outlined what his 2013 signing has to do now.

“It’s just consistency and we have started to see that in his game,” said the manager.

“He’s also the type of player that his numbers will be important. It’s about creating and scoring goals – that’s the type of player that he is, the level that he wants to get to and the level that he’s working very hard to attain.

“He’s a player, like you saw last week, that at the end of the game has got that magic that can just win you a game of football out of nothing.

“We have seen that over time here, how he has adapted and adjusted to life at this level. For me, at the age he is he’s only going to get better and better. But consistency is important for him and that’s something that he’s starting to really show.”

Coutinho was a surprise omission from the latest Brazil squad named last week for a pair of friendlies in the United States in early September.

Rodgers discussed the news with the 23-year-old at Melwood and revealed why he was so impressed by the player’s reaction.

The boss explained: “I spoke to him at length on it and of course he’s disappointed, but straight away his only focus is on Liverpool – that was his thought, to continue to work here.

“He’s a really humble boy and he’s a really proud man for his country. So I’m sure that he’ll pick up the form that he’s shown here over the last 18 months and it won’t be too long before he’s back in it.”

Consistency is not just the target for Coutinho, but for the Reds collectively.

Newly-promoted Bournemouth make the trip to Merseyside this evening and Liverpool are determined to follow up the victory at Stoke with maximum points.

Rodgers added: “If you can make a good start and find consistency early on, that breeds confidence for you for the remainder of the season.

“That didn’t really kick in for us until October [last season], which is way too late really. So that’s the plan.

“We made a great start last weekend, with good organisation throughout the team. We didn’t have too many scares defensively; we obviously didn’t create as much as you would want but ended up winning the game with a clean sheet.

“It gets you off to a great start and validates a lot of the work that you do over the course of the pre-season. We now move onto the next game and that’s the only thought.

“If we get a victory against Bournemouth, that again increases the confidence level and the hope for consistency.”

        Brendan's Bournemouth programme notes

A highlight of official matchday programme 'This Is Anfield' is the revealing notes of Brendan Rodgers and this season we'll be publishing exclusive extracts from the manager's pre-match thoughts ahead of each Liverpool fixture.

Bournemouth visit Anfield for the first home game of the campaign tonight and the boss has stressed the importance of the Reds’ encouraging start at Stoke City.

He writes: “Last Sunday’s result was important for a number of reasons. A big positive was the three points itself: with the league being the most competitive it’s ever been, every point is precious this campaign.

“Also, it was great to see the character and desire present in the squad; a determination to perform and fight for our supporters.

“The clean sheet and a sublime winning goal also gave great satisfaction, as did the performances of our new players, who have shown great application during the summer to adapt to our way of working.

“However, the biggest positive was the attitude in the dressing room at full-time: there was no elation or euphoria. There was an immediate focus on our next fixture, today’s game and the importance of backing up one good result with another.”

I think Rodgers is wrong and it'll be his undoing but I can't be arsed about it anymore. He rates Dejan, I don't, I think he'll lose his job over it. He doesn't.

Bournemouth: The view from the opposition

Ahead of Liverpool's first home game of 2015-16, we speak to Bournemouth ambassador Steve Fletcher on what the Reds can expect from the newly-promoted outfit at Anfield.

The former striker is a Cherries legend having made 728 appearances across two spells, and last year he received the Football League's inaugural Sir Tom Finney Award for his services to the game over a 24-year career.

A boyhood Liverpool fan, Fletcher tells us about Bournemouth’s rise to the top flight and expectations for the campaign ahead.

Steve, Monday night at Anfield for Bournemouth in front of a live TV audience – is this what it’s all about for Bournemouth, testing yourself against one of the world’s most famous clubs?

Absolutely. I was a Liverpool fan as a child growing up and the likes of Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush were my heroes. After retiring two years ago it’s ironic now we have this game at Anfield live on TV because I just wish I could rewind my career a few years and be out there with the lads. When the fixtures came out in June and we knew Liverpool would be our first away game you can imagine the buzz around our place. With no disrespect to the other clubs in the Premier League, you are looking forward to playing at Anfield, going to Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea because we have never been in the Premier League. To play at Anfield and the fact that it’s being televised is almost surreal to a club like Bournemouth.

When you hear the first strains of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ will this be a culmination of a dream for Bournemouth, and does the anthem also inspire the opposition?

I think so. Even if you are not a Liverpool fan you can’t fail to be inspired when the song comes on at Anfield. Our two centre-backs, Steve Cook and our captain Tommy Elphick are both Liverpool fans, so like myself it will make the hairs on the back of our neck stand up. The atmosphere does spur you on and I’m sure it will bring the best out of our players. It’s such an iconic anthem and when it comes on and the Kop is singing it, it will hit home to our boys that we have arrived in the Premier League. If you can’t get inspired by that then you never will be as a footballer.

Bournemouth have had a remarkable rise – League Two to the Premier League – what do you put that down to?

Predominantly our manager Eddie Howe along with the backing of our owner Maxim Demin. We have got big ambitions but we are a small club. When you have a great manager like we have you need somebody who can back him and we have that. The manager set his stall out and had a vision. We have probably reached our goal quicker than anybody anticipated, I wouldn’t try to deny that. I just think that the way everybody pulls together at our football club is a key to success because we are very tight-knit, off the field as well, every department tries to do well for each other. Our motto is ‘together, anything is possible,’ and we have proved that. We try to improve every year and that’s what we’ve done. With Eddie’s philosophy and vision for this football club, I definitely think we are in good hands for the future.

What are realistic expectations for Bournemouth this season?

Survival I suppose. It would be fantastic if we could reach the dizzy heights of the middle of the league but first and foremost our objective is survival. It has to be because for us to be in the Premier League is surreal, but now we are here the reality has got to kick in. We’ve got to maintain our position and I think we have to try to replicate what Swansea have done. They are the blueprint for a club like us. Yes, they are a bigger city than Bournemouth, but they came up through the leagues and went from the Vetch Field to a fantastic new stadium, they play good football and have never changed their philosophy. They are almost now an established Premier League club and that is the blueprint we have got to look at. Swansea are a great blueprint for us.

Who, for you, are the key men Bournemouth have to contend with on Monday?

Every player that takes to the field against us! Liverpool are a fantastic club, my childhood team and I was devastated the other year when they narrowly missed out on the title, because it took me back to the 1980s when we won everything. We have just got to be wary of every player because every player that puts on a red shirt is where all of our players want to be. We can only dream of getting anywhere near Liverpool and every player is a danger. We will have to be at our best, we know that, to even compete on the same level but we are capable of that. I’m never going to say we are going to Anfield and will produce miracles, but if we play our football the way we can, we can surprise a few people. Listen, if we come away from Liverpool with anything it will have been an amazing day. Funny things have happened but I do expect Liverpool at Anfield will be one of the hardest games we will have to play this season. We need Liverpool not to play well and at the same time we have to be at our best, it’s as simple as that for us to get something, but it can happen.

Just tell us what your role is at Bournemouth these days?

My role is head of UK recruitment and club ambassador. I played for the club for over 20 years and then when I retired in 2013 I took up the recruitment role. Being club ambassador takes me all over the town in different walks of life, from charities to businesses and visiting schools. I really enjoy my role and it’s a bit different to when I was a player of spending three hours on a training field and then going home. I do 12-hour days now but I’m still at the football club and I get to go all over the place scouting and also Europe as well. It’s not a bad life to be about to visit Anfield on a Monday night and cheer on my beloved AFC Bournemouth.
