So Lawrenson & Hansen or Gillespie / Hansen in the mid to late 80's wasnt better than them
I was tying to frame it since then...the last 27 years?

Alan Hansen is simply one of the best football players ever to have lived. He doesn't get anything like the credit he deserves. Love that bloke. You can trace all of our problems back to his retirement.
      Really?

Certainly the coolest most composed and effective defender ever to wear the shirt !
Worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do but does not actually get you anywhere.

I agree. And to think he used to score those mazy run goals at first too.

Hansen is without a doubt our best defender ever. The only reason he does not get much credit is because he has not played since the late 80s. Pretty sure everyone who saw him back then rated him... except maYbe ferguscum

But our defensive problems now have nothing to do with him. Hyypia was world class as a replacement and a bedrock of both houllier and benitez solid defensively teams. I would argue it was him thar we failed to replace. None of our defenders since are anywhere near as aerially. dominant. Still say we need a holding midfielder to sit reguardless.

Remember hansen had a world class team in front of him. Whelan Houghton mcmahon Nicol could all play and tackle. Gone it seems are the days of the multidimensional player. Not sure having him in our defence during Evans houllier or benitez reign would have made a huge difference.

Hyypia is the best centre half I've seen in the flesh. Awesome player.

I actually think I would give Sami the nod over Hansen for pure defending because he didn't have any pace to get him out of trouble if he made a mistake.

As much as I like Houllier he does take a lot of credit for others successes. He took credit for France's WC victory, even though he wasn't in charge, and also took credit for Cantona going to United.
"That's how I found myself on the Kop that day I had my blue-and-white scarf safely tucked away inside my coat as I listened to Liverpool songs and swayed with the masses.

Then City scored and I screeched and this big bloke, a Liverpool supporter, made towards me and I thought he was going to throttle me. But he just pulled my scarf from under my coat so it lay on the outside, and said: "You should always be proud of your colours, lad."

Yeah bit ironic that when he was in charge of the French team they failed to qualify for the WC.

                      3rd place. Worst champions ever.

He only got sent off once and went amn entire season without a booking, if I recall correctly. First non UK player to be given the captaincy? And accepted gracefully the decision to take it away from him. I think the guy is a legend.

Surely that's not true? Desailly or Cantona are two that immediately spring to mind and I'm sure there are a few more.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

I did wonder that, but how many forein players did we have before the 90's that could have been made captain?

Would be the same with most English clubs which is why I thought he meant that.
