With a soft centre and so many defensive mistakes is it any wonder we are where we are? Problem with the forwards is that Salah, Mane and Firmino had a great understanding of their roles and each others games, they were explosive players, who could win/turn games in minutes, as good individually as the guys we have now might be there isn't that same understanding, partnership whatever that made them greater than the sum of their parts and I think Salah is suffering (or at least appears to be) as a resilt
We created more XG yesterday than we did vs United and Bournemouth at home

That may well be the case but we our conversion of those chances was poor, we got 2 out of and expected 4.76. I just don't think we really ever convincingly looked like we would score

        Mo's ****, Darwin's ****, Hendo's ****, Trents ****, VVD ****, Robbo ****........... seriously when did we become so ****ing entitled.

Less than 12 months ago we were living the ****ing dream with these same players, we need to acknowledge that surley & yes i know standards have slipped but **** me, reading this forum is hard work & offers no enjoyment anymore.

Its a blip for these players (other than Hendo whose legs have gone, but can still be a big player for us for at least another season).

This team is, & always has been just that, a team & a sum of its parts; so whilst it has become dysfunctional this season, a couple of key signings & we are back dining at the top table.

          Can it not be both?

That a number of players are now in a sustained run of form that ranges between poor and average depending on the player. That some of them are too young to move like they are ten years older.

And that the right reinforcements in the summer, with some of the underperforming players maybe becoming the back ups, could/should see a big uptick in results?

A poor run of form for established players tends to last weeks, maybe a couple months at most for those that turn it around.

We do have a number of players that were showing signs of needing to be phased out last season ( phased out for me can mean becoming squad players as easily as it can mean being sold) but our results last season papered over a lot of cracks.

Is not like we were not talking last season about how we needed to refresh the midfield.

So a lot of the players many thought needed to have their minutes managed better this season have instead gone into this season as the go to guys again and it has cost us. Easy to say of course in hindsight.

A five player window could transform us imo. Two starting midfielders and one squaddie midfielder that can compete for a spot.

One right sided attacker (higher quality if Salah left or one that is young but good enough to step in/compete if Salah stays)

One centre back (especially if Matip moves on as is rumoured.) who is good enough to come in and be our number three CB and to compete with the two starters.

We do something like that and some of the underperfromers might get more cover and be able to do better or they might be forced to up their games to get minutes.

It's not all gloom and doom, but we do need some serious pruning, especially in the middle, to get it right.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

I'd like to believe that you are right, and that a couple of signings will sort this out, but to be honest I am not convinced. Maybe that makes me one of those miserable *******s that makes this place hard work, but I think there are problems in all areas of the pitch.

Our success was built on defensive solidarity with VVD playing like he was superhuman, three midfielders who worked and worked there ass off and great forwards with almost telepathic understanding able to create chances and score goals. For me at the moment we have lost all that. VVD is human and his performances have been indifferent or poor. The work the midfield used to do isn't getting done, because legs have gone, tiredness, maybe complacency, players not understanding their role, maybe not being good enough or even the change to try and make the midfield more creative, have all had an impact. The forward line has changed we have lost Mane, who I thought was key to the pressing game, Firmino is on his way out, Salah is the only regular from that old three. His form has dipped because there isn't that understanding there and to be honest I don't think there is the same quality or goal scoring threat that there was previously. If you take the two freakishly big wins out (9-0 and 7-0) we are averaging 1.25 goals a game and are far too easy to play through, it's no wonder we are where we are in the table. I want to believe when Diaz gomes back and Nunez gets some confidence we will get back to where we were, but I'm just not sure that's going to happen.

Midfield is clearly a big issue but I don't think a signing or two alone will sort this out.
