It’s the Cork blood in me but even after moving to Clare I used to go to all the games with my Dad from the mid 80s to the mid 00s. I genuinely believe that a good game of hurling can’t be beaten - skill, pace and physicality......I love it

Gaelic football (although I played to a decent level) isn’t even close

None but broke my nose 3 times playing football (soccer) - hurling I played a bit and got a few belts but nothing life threatening

Can't beat having a bit of Rebel blood mixed in you

As for hurling, well it is probably the fastest or at the very least one of the fastest team sports on the planet, and the physicality of the sport is something else alright.

Oddly enough, for a non GAA die hard, I was ok at gaelic football ( only to secondary and college teams level though) and quite enjoyed playing when I was younger and I loved the training side of it. Never played hurling to any sort of decent level and to be honest I do not think I would have been much good at it if I had tried.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

It's absolutely superb! I supported Cork (my parents lived in Bantry) but I wasn't made to feel particularly welcome being from England. Still it's a blinding sport! Puts all these pussies like Neymar to shame!

Don't know anything about hurley except from what I've heard in Dubliners and Pogues songs, but surely the training must be comparatively easy, childsplay even compared to a few rounds of skipping, bag/pad work and sparring, finishing with abs?

I'm confused, have I been wrong thinking you're an Australian all of these years?

Remember listening to the Broad Majestic Shannon by the Pogues and looking up 'hurley ball' in the dictionary because I didn't know wtf it was.

I was born in Harrow and lived in Slough for 27 years, you're slightly wrong

I played gaelic football not hurling and it was when I was in secondary school and the first year or so in college.

But yes now that I think about it, it was a piece of cake compared to skipping

But any excuse to put this up as your use of Hurley reminded me of the Stath trying to say the word.

Bantry is a lovely part of Cork - deeper West Cork up there with the most beautiful places in Ireland and that is saying something - I went there on holidays for years as a child. Sorry about the ‘welcome’ - still a lot of bad sentiment years ago against English people especially in rural Ireland. There was a large English/foreign community (artist/hippy types ) in remote West Cork in the 80s.......it was the scene of an infamous murder that was never solved if Sophie Tuscan du Plantier.......a good audiobook series in audible about it called West Cork

As with hurling - it’s a real mans game

Same - played a few junior games after that but getting thumped every week put me off it and stayed with football (soccer)

That's some interesting background, I can understand. Even my friend who is Irish but with an English accent had a harder time.

My nan was born and raised in Cork so I can claim *some* heritage!
