How important is captaincy? I can't tell you a single captain of a rival team nor the England team.

    It's meaningless.
I agree that captaincy is not that important but having leaders in the team is. As you say Gerrard wasn't a great captain or leader but for much of his career he didn't need to be because there were a lot of players who were leaders or captain material. In the Benitez era half of the players on the pitch could have been captain we were almost spoilt for. Now we have the opposite problem. With the lack of leaders in the current side having some sort of leader is really important. Anyone who is a regular in the side with remote leadership skills is likely to be captain. Unfortunately I don't think that that player is currently in the squad.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

So shouldn’t we be targeting players with these skills ?
Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

Yes we should. These player largely tend tof be defenders or midfielders and the fact that these are the areas that we are struggling in probably highlights the problem.

So do the players that we’ve been linked to process the required skill set of leadership within their current club set up?

The captaincy is not important, it's leaders on the pitch we are lacking.

              Yes. As should every team.

But that's got little to do with this notion of captaincy.
              Oh I don't know.

Next leader will be Johnny Evans

Edit. Alan Smith's suggestion. Say no more, thickest man in football

I think the captain, just need to keep the dressing room/welcome new lads etc and Henderson does that job fine

I don't even think Gerrard was a great captain per se, he was more of an inspiration

Agree with those saying we need leaders, regardless of whether they end up as captains or not

The leader we all seem to be wanting in January will arrive in july, at city.

we better have some alternatives lined up.
removing all the weak links makes us stronger

too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.
