The clear and obvious rubbish gives the get out of getting involved or not whilst using the same justification for either doing so or not.

Just get the decisions right, if a ref has missed something or got it wrong and VAR helps him get the right decision in the end then I'm pretty sure all supporters would be happy.

Rugby has pretty much nailed the video ref and with a fraction of the financial support that top tier football has.

agreed. the standard is atrocious. i'd argue var has made it worse but no surprise when its remit isn't even to 'get decisions correct'
It's not but the absolute bare minimum we should be seeing is consistency and certainly from the same officials in the same match.

Very much so, but at the same time our players, especially our captain, need to ensure that they do not do something stupid (like VVD mouthing off as he did) and make it easy for the laws of the game to be applied against us.

We cannot control how those laws are applied in relation to other teams, but we sure as hell can make it more difficult for them to be imposed on us.

          What exactly did he say?

Gomez played well for once (apart from a sloppy pass or two). I think we should be able to get through. We seem to play better with 10 men, so maybe we can get someone else sent off. Konate should be back too.

Trent being captain might focus him a bit more (maybe)... I thought he played quite well after the sending off.

Pretty sure he told the ref he's a ****ing joke and to **** off at least 5 times, then told Poorcunt the 4th official to "not ****ing touch me" when he tried to usher him down the tunnel.

Well if the players can't touch them, why are the officials allowed. Robbo got an elbow in the face the last time he did it FFS.

**** off is probably ohm that's used everywhere on the pitch. "You're a ****ing joke" is the one they will get him on, despite it being valid assessment of his performance in the game.

Going to swim against the tide here but our captain should show more sense. We all know the new rules and it's unacceptable to use language like that no matter how incompetent the officials are. These cunts are looking to make an example of someone and big Virgil has fallen for it.

                  Definitely not captain behaviour

The whole team was rattled, the ref was having a mare, Newcastle were in our faces, the crowd were baying for blood and Virg let it get to him. It was a foul, it was most likely a red card cos I don't think any covering player would get there before Isaak took the shot and there it should have ended. Take the card and walk off, maybe have a few choice words without the swearing and questioning the referees ability. Show passion by all means, but keep it professional.

So yeah, 1 match ban for the foul and red, and then 1 or more matches on top of that (I expect, can't see it just being a fine) for the loss of control.

A couple of points though the charge is for "abusive and/or insulting words towards an official" I would say that "**** off", "that's a ****ing joke," "you are a ****ing joke" all fall into that category. Seemingly you can tell an official to **** off without consequence. The other two are more serious I would take "that's a ****ing joke" to be referring to the decision, again I am fairly sure I have seen players say that somewhat frequently on the pitch. The third "you are a ****ing joke" is more of a personal insult to the referee, so perhaps that is where the line is.

I suspect the issue isn't that he said it once, it was more that he was refusing to leave the field and saying what ever he said multiple times.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

No, the Ref was having a mare one way TBH.

It was a red card IMO, but next weekend it won't be for the exact offence.

I get the VVD was rattled, but he should have shown restraint; altough it must be hard to do, when you know the ref is not playing it straight

Grealish will this weekend shout **** off at a ref/lino at least three times, he does it on every time he gets touched & no foul.

De Bryne, Jesus, Rashford they all do it

Lots of players do it I think it is because he has done it after being sent off and refusing to/slowly leaving the field whilst doing it that is seen as the problem. If you got booked, sent off or suspended everytime someone swore at the ref there would be no one playing the game.

At the end of the day that is just semantics and the reality is we will face Villa and Wolves without him, and possibly West Ham and Spurs if they choose to use him as the poster boy for the latest respect campaign.

Extra match ban and £100k fine for Virg:

Suppose we should be happy it’s only an additional 1 match ban. £100k seems a bit steep though, is this normal?
