I think Matip started off as Klopp's preferred partner for Virgil, but in recent weeks Lovren has overtaken him. Similar to the Gomez/Trent situation.

That said, I always fancied Lovren to start against United. I do like Matip, but he can be bullied a bit easily which United would no doubt try to exploit.

Not so sure that either is ahead of the other. If we look at our recent run of games they are each getting to play every second game.

With Gomez and TAA it is a case of two young players competing for a slot whilst the usual regular is out of the picture. But one woukld think that a senior CB slot would not be rotated as much other than for injuries or the like, especially if we want to establish a solid partnership for VVD.

Then again Klopp has shown time after time this season that he gets more things right than wrong and a hell of a lot of what seemed like baffling decisions to supporters turned out to be very smart moves by the manager. I'm just curious if he is trying to see which of the two ups their game the most, or if he is just ensuring that VVD has a fresh player beside him each game until we can bring in a better player in the summer.
