Agree with you. Think it was last season I said he reminded me of a young Goretzka in a lot of what he does and in terms of physical build. So much of how he plays looks more like a young up and coming German midfielder in style than it does an English starlet.

Whist he is not at the level now that Goretzka was at at the same age, he looks to be more held back by confidence or instructions (maybe a mix of both) than ability and you have to think that at some time he will develop a cockiness or confidence that matches his ability and really kick on.

I think he has that cockiness and confidence, and it's been curbed. He probably held on to the ball too long when he first came into the side, taking the piss and dribbling was a good showcase of his confidence and ability, but last night I thought was a good example of him using the ball quicker and more vertically - played some nice forward passes.

Looking at his performance last night he really should get more opportunities I think he's a good player with potential to be even better. I feel that he's better in that left sided number 8 role (or whatever we are calling it), as most of his good attacking work comes down that side.

If that performance was from Foden, the press would all be masturbating in unison.

He’s very solid, wants the ball, is trusted by his teammates and doesn’t seem to make many mistakes. I think he needs to add something to his game to become a regular for Liverpool an England though. Some shots and goals would probably do it.

I think he's been in a tricky situation. He has so much natural flair, and really shines when he's feeling cocky as ****, but I think Klopp wanted him to cut some of that out and become almost more Gini like - better tactically, more disciplined, and I reckon Jones almost took that stuff too far...started playing safe and lost some of that swag. If he can get the balance right he can spend his career here. Great to have a midfield option who can go past people, play progressive passes and score goals. He's still only 20. Lots more to come imo.

Can't wait to see him get a good run of games. He will shine

I think the problem is getting him that run of games, he's probably in competition with Thiago and Keita for the third spot in midfield alongside Fabinho and Henderson. Thiago is out for a while but he probably only has one or two games until Naby gets back from the ACN and it's unclear who would be the preferred option or if there would be some swapping between the two of them.

I wonder if Klopp would be prepared to go with Fabinho and 2 of Jones, Keita and Thiago?

That's why I added the intructions bit

He is nowhere near Goretzka when the German was 19 or 20, but few are, but the physical and technical side of his game are so reminiscent of the German. Plus Goretzka had the advantage of being at a club with less expectations that could put in young players easier than we can.

Think that when the shackles come off, be they mental or instructed ones, that Jone will be a hell of a player. Also think he will be one of those players that becomes a very important part of what makes the team tick but that will not always be appreciated for it until he is out of the team. The ones that are not full of flashy moments, but bring that bit of class and control, the Rolls Royce type players.

Thought he carried the ball forward really well last night, still has the tendency to hang onto the ball too long though.

Yeah thought he did really well last night & at times he reminded me of Gini. He’s still a little rusty but getting better each outing.

Few times earlier in the match where when he got the ball I just wished he would move faster, either himself or passing it on, but he definitely grew into that game.

He used to want to carry the ball for too long, getting closed down, then not releasing.
Maybe further coaching has helped him realise its a team game, and he looks better for it.

                            21st January - What a player!
                            18th February - What player?

                            The Internet, eh?

One more performance from Elliot like the other night, he'll be on the chopping block too.

He's clearly talented but he seems to not being playing his natural game to me, which I assume is by design from Klopp.

Need patience with him and we're fortunate at the moment we have options where players will be left out of the match day squad if they're not quite at it.

I'm not sure it's like that is it? A few lads don't rate him and that's ok.

He's a talented player and I like him a lot, but his problem is we're stacked with very good midfielders and now everyone's fit you struggle to see where he gets game time. He's only just turned 21 so still very young but I do think he's at a point where he needs to start kicking on. I wouldn't send him on loan cos we're only a couple of injuries away from needing him - and since Thiago and Keita are so brittle, that's always likely. But I'd like to see him impacting games more regularly now.
