The things you forgot are his quick release/distribution but more than anything it's his ability to save and hold the ball, he's almost peerless in that regard IMO.

This aligned with ability to hold the ball make him so good - it’s such a good feeling having this much confidence in your goalkeeperOriginally posted by dom9 View PostI don't think he actually makes many of what you might call "classic" saves.
He's not spectacular.
He doesn't need to be.
It's all about concentration, anticipation, awareness, positioning and decision making. Then some agility to pull out a worldie when needed.
Probably the most efficient goalkeeper in history.

Not sure we had a make do approach. We just signed keepers that didn't work out. People of their level are hard to come by. Look at list of those mentioned as good options before we got Mignolet and look at how most have done, they've largely been bang average.Originally posted by Pepe79 View PostHe’s incredible.
Such an important position, it’s insane that the club had such a ‘make do’ approach with goalkeepers after Reina.
Alisson is ****ing immense. We're incredibly fortunate to have him.Like blood on iron

I mean we persisted with keepers who weren’t really convincing for a good 4 or 5 years. I know Karius had that spell where it looked like he was on track before the CL Final happened. But still, the Mignolet then chopping and changing between Mig/Karius era went on a bit too long.Originally posted by Red_Polo View PostNot sure we had a make do approach. Mignolet never seemed like the right signing at the time. And you wonder if Karius would have still been our top pick had it not been for his low release fee..

Yeah it felt like forever - we had 3 years of Mig before getting Karius and the switching between them dragged things along. I think we just knew there was nobody available who was going to clearly make the difference. Less a policy of making do and more having to until the right player was available. Glad we did now really!Originally posted by Pepe79 View PostI mean we persisted with keepers who weren’t really convincing for a good 4 or 5 years. The glory years for manure with Schmeichel and van der sar, or chavs with Cech and courtois perfectly illustrates how 2nd or 3rd rate our keepers have been for years.removing all the weak links makes us stronger
too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

I think that’s still ‘making do’ (in inverted commas!) either way.Originally posted by Red_Polo View PostYeah it felt like forever - we had 3 years of Mig before getting Karius and the switching between them dragged things along. Ultimately though, if this is what it took for everything to align for us to eventually have Alisson now, then I’ll take it!

Big gap between Schmeichel and VDS though where they had Bosnich, Carroll, Taibi, Barthez, and ****ing hell, HowardOriginally posted by baitman View PostThe glory years for manure with Schmeichel and van der sar, or chavs with Cech and courtois perfectly illustrates how 2nd or 3rd rate our keepers have been for years.
Chelsea's run has been pretty amazing - De Goey, Cudicini, Cech and Courtois all gradually handing over to each other.Like blood on iron
