Its an old old tactic, we use to do it back in the 70's & 80s

A lot of the tactics we use today are sophisticated versions of tactics Paisleys sides used

You can imagine Klopp's delight when he came across an old training manual used by Bob Paisley at Melwood!
Nope, don't need anger management, you just need to stop pissing me off!

Being serious though if anyone doesnt think Paisleys sides pressed from the front with high intensity or didnt defend a very high line and squeeze the play clearly didnt watch us back then

We also had 2 very attacking fullbacks back then

Theres lots of similarities in style and to some degree even the make up of the team

Aye, Rushie was a defenders nightmare with his constant pressing. His work off the ball was as impressive as his goal scoring feats

That’s true, but you can’t really compare any football from back then to now because of the back-pass rule.

It was the all time get out of jail free card. Definitely the single best and most important change that improved and changed the game for the better. Football is far better and more fluid now meaning formations and systems need to be also.

Watch how we knock the ball across the back four and back to the keeper now

I think those old teams would be able to do that no problem

Thats kind of getting away from the point though, the basics of football systems & styles are not much different from what they were back then and our DNA under Klopp definitely goes back to Paisley tactics

The sophistication of how we put together the system and styles is off the scale though but Paisley was also massively ahead of his time

I am not saying this team isnt as good as those teams what I am saying is a lot of what they are doing now is very similar to what Paisley was doing from 77-83

I don’t disagree. I was just reflecting back and the ‘reset’ of the pass back was such a fundamental part of 70’s and 80’s football. Removing the ability to do so changed the pace and flow of football for better for ever. There’s that classic Souness passback at Rangers and Denmark when they won the euros that spring to mond, which effectively changed the game for ever because it had become so boring to watch.

I’ve definitely found watching the pre-set moves the trigger points and how we work teams out fascinating. We almost have a playbook and have worked on which ‘plays’ will work best depending on the oppposition. There is room for some flexibility within that, but not much. Tactical and positional discipline is paramount and allows us to impose our style of play on each match - something we are very good at. It’s why Klopp preaches about the collective and we should realise there are personalities and types of player they no matter how good they are we will never be in for as the way they play does not enhance the collective.

This team is getting better and better, but can get better still. I think the similarities with the nous of the teams of the old is definitely there. Teams just have more money to throw at stats and analysis to refine it to basically a science, and good teams like us (and City tbf) do it very well.

It’s also interesting to watch Mourinho, who is not an old man, flounder to keep up with this new approach, considering he himself was viewed as a revolutionary not so long ago.

I see City had a celebration like they had won the league at the weekend. Classy or what.
