Two ankle surgeries, cruciate ligament injury, Achilles tendon injury and a really bad knee injury which yet again he had surgery on. He's only 24 ffs, it's insane. It's his 4th long term lay off since joining us and now he has been out with a calf injury.

VVD and Matip (If he can stay fit) have at least 4 or 5 years left and Konate was bought for the future. If everyone is fully fit (I know) VVD & Matip are the number one pairing. Gomez main asset is his pace which is amazing to have as a CB, he is not a tall CB and is not great in the air, nor is he a good ball playing CB & his positional sense isn't great either.

I really do feel for the lad but if.... and that's a big if he can get fully fit and firing, do we really think that he will be happy be a squad player? Konate will for the time being as he is new and we all know Klopp mostly beds defenders in slowly. He will eventually get pissed off too as these kids want to play. Unfortunately for Konate and Gomez, MAtip has been outstanding and is an outstanding CB when he plays.

What the hell did Gomez do to you?

He is not a very tall CB but at 6'2 he is not a short one either. He is a pretty good passer of the ball for a CB with his accurate pass stats in all comps for the past 4 or five years ranging from 85% to 90%.

When it comes to heading the ball, he has averaged about 3 aerials won per game in the Preier league for the past three or four seasons. To put that in context, VVD is averaging 3.3 aerial duals won per game in the PL this season and the two seasons before that VVD averaged 2.4 per game and 5 per game. Matip this season is averaging 3.6 aerial dual won per game. So Gomez may not be quite as good as winning aerial duals as Matip and VVD but he is not a long way behind either of them.

His positioning is not bad imo. Not at the level of that of VVD and below that of Matip as well imo, but then again he is much younger than both of them and would have to hope that with the same amount of experience as those two he would improve.

I get making an arguement aginst Gomez based on his unavailability (even if he is a player I would not sell myself) but I do not get any arguement against him on ability as he has shown many times to the eye what he can do on the pitch and his stats back that up as well.

For me, some will disagree with this bit and I can see why, I would have him ahead of Matip if both were fully fit and fully match sharp as I think the pace and physicality of Gomez just adds a little something extra to our back line. I think Matip is a more savvy defender and I really rate Matip as well, but think a fit Gomez suits a high line/high press more. Course you could just point at the obvious flaw in what I said by saying getting a fully fit Gomez is the problem with all that.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Gomez is a really good player. Matip is brilliant too. And Konate has huge potential. And Virgil is the best in the world - even after his bad injury last year.

Overall, we are blessed in the CB area. In an ideal world, Gomez and Konate are our first choice partnership in about 6 years time!!!

I think all top clubs need 4 high quality CBs and ideally a promising youngster, we saw that first hand last year. That allows for injuries and I think I’d like Joe in that quartet of CBs at the club. I know his pace is one of his best attributes but I think his passing between the lines in superb and he can also carry the ball out. Heading not the best but when is is good he’s an absolute Rolls Royce

I hear ya with regards to injury - hence why we need options and rotation. Matip is the same - I’m waiting for him to get injured any day now

Nobody expected Matip to go this long without injury. I think he is a fair bit above a fully fit Gomez, but that may be mostly down to experience. JoGo is English, and we need a % in the squad, so there is no way we sell.
In the beginning, Fowler created the Heaven and the Earth.

The homegrown factor is something that can't really be underestimated as we are at our quota of non-HG players.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Gomez is in all the training pics. Maybe too soon for him to start?

Sick of our crocks, useless to us if you are not available for sustained periods nearly every season. Always injured or coming back from injury. Injuries happen, not a players fault is he in injury prone or unlucky but at the end of the day football is a ruthless business and we need bodies readily available.

The comment about him being fit and ready to sell in January was obviously tongue in cheek reply to memzey as it would be epically stupid to pull numbers away from the defence next month but I do not see him as the future of LFC they way his career has panned out so far. Things may change and I hope they do for him as that kind of pace at a CB position is rare but I just don't see it.

All teams get players injured though, it's the nature of elite sport.

I would have thought this would be the perfect match to simulate the AFCON period when our African players will be away.

                                Shankly

Reported to have said "I don't talk to players when they are injured. Good players don't get injured"

And there were these two gems from "the Little Red Book"

Shankly hated players being injured. Chris Lawler was in the Anfield treatment room after making 241 consecutive appearances for Liverpool between October 1965 and April 1971. Paisley told Shankly that there was no way that Lawler could play in the next game because his ankle had swollen up like a balloon.
'Hes a bloody malingerer,' snapped Shankly angrily.

Tommy Smith was injured and had to go off during a game. Shankly ran over to see how he was.
'Are yer alright son?' Shankly inquired.
'Its my leg boss. Its killing me.' was Smiths reply.
'Correction son,' Shankly said. 'Its not your leg, its Liverpools leg.'
