Those are going back a bit further, more like 10 years, and there are various others in that period (Kent £6.5m, Camacho £5m, Sinclair £3m, Ejaria £3m). But those were relatively infrequent, it feels like the last 5 years or so we have really stepped it up in terms of getting good money for players who weren't going to make it here. Morton and Kelleher effectively covered the fee for Frimpong, Quansah's fee (plus the £10m bonus from TAA) covered Kerkez, the fee from selling 3 squad players has (more or less) bought us 2 starting players.

Selling these youngster well alongside the likes of Carvalho and possibly Elliott are a big part of why we are able to have a big summer like this

To be fair so probably are we I believe we got 20% of their profit which equates to another upto £8m (depending on the terms), so we paid £3m for him initially, made £16m on him when we sold to Bournemouth and another upto £8m when they sold him to Spurs

Was it Richard Hughes in charge of that deal and Smith too?

He certainly was working at Bournemouth at that time.

Seems like he was always doing good deals for Liverpool even when not working for them
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

So I would probably say it is fairer to count them as first team signings rather than academy sales, but we sold them for £20m each so made about £30m profit on them

Elliott would be another who falls into this category IMO
Didn't realise we paid so much for Carv, thought it was a similar fee to Sepp.

Cheers bud. Other than our matches I tend to only watch the overnight goals reel.

He had a couple of injuries last year, one bad one which ended his season early.

Think I read he's had a decent preseason though.

Seems a bit sad that our 3 England u21 winners are all leaving the club.

I feel like there may be a widening gap between the first team and youth making it harder to step up.

Not a bad thing maybe, as the quality has improved at the top, but I also dont want our academy there just to make money.

I guess thats easier when you dont have the pressure of winning everything in front of you.

I often wonder how Fowler Mcmanaman Owen and Carra would have developed if we hadnt turned to **** in the early 90s.

Or if ManU would have dominated if their first team was a bit stronger when Beckhams generation came through
In the beginning, Fowler created the Heaven and the Earth.

Worked well for City when they sold their U21 Euro winner.

Was surprised by those findings myself. Suspect lots of the games came from the bench.

Is the gap really getting wider? To be honest I am not sure. I wonder if we are just producing better players who aren't quite making it with us but will go on to have good careers elsewhere, which to be honest we haven't really been producing enough of in recent years. Most of our academy youngsters seem to have ended up in the lower leagues or playing in some minor european league.

Elliott and Quansah both played a significant amount of games for us 147 and 58, they just weren't able to establish themselves because Elliott didn't have the pace and was likely competing for a place in the side against Mo Salah who will be an all time LFC great. This might sound mad but I have a feeling that we might take up the option to buy back Quansah in a couple of years as I think he will develop and just needed the games. I think we are being more proactive in moving players on and giving them a chance to have good careers rather than holding onto them for a year or two more giving them cup games and hoping they will progress which I think to be honest holds them back. I can see the sell and buy back becoming a more prevalent thing in future to be honest.

Obviously we would all love to see some world class talents come through the academy and establish themselves in the first team but the reality is such players are few and far between

I'm the same on Quansah - think he has got the passing ability and personality, along with the more classic defensive attributes, to be our long-term VVD replacement, once he fills out a bit and improves the consistency of his decision making, which will come with games

I think he will be back here in 2 years

And once he wins more duels. At the moment, in the air and on-on-one he is ordinary. The rest is very good.

Agree, I don’t think it’s getting wider unless you are comparing maybe to the 90s or earlier when the league was still majority British players.

I think what’s happening is England is producing very good national teams at youth level and other clubs are interested and know it’s hard for them to break through in the prem.

The next generation of English players also seem to be much more open to going abroad after the examples set by sancho, Bellingham etc who really broke through at Dortmund

This could be very beneficial with deals having sell on clauses. They go overseas have a good season or two and increase their value and will at some stage like to come back to England you know with the money in the premier league they’ll be clubs happy to pay big for them which means more money for us.
