We really are an exceptional side except we can get carved open playing the high line. Something needs to be done about that. Maybe it’s time for Gomez to start…?

Matip definitely not in his best form, and his slack passing causes mayhem. Gomez and Konate have been very patient and deserve the start now.Modifying post.

His pace (of that of Konate) is something that would be useful when we get hit on the counter, but Matip (not at his best today tbf) is not exactly slow himself.
Think the issues today that lead to us being exposed at times originated more often in midfeld than at CB tbh.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

1. I think control of the ball is a difficult one, I think Jota knocks the ball past the keeper and if the keeper doesn't get a touch on the ball but takes the player out the question is whether the player would have got to the ball. This isn't in control of the ball but would be a penalty as it stops the player getting the ball. The situation becomes more complicated if there are other players involved who may or may not get the ball. If the penalty area is packed with players having control of the ball is probably significant.Originally posted by Paul12 View PostI don't understand the rules anymore:
1 The pen: do you need to be in control of the ball? Outside the area the view seems to be "no" but in the box it it seems usually to be "yes". Obviously nonsense but...SORT I T OUT!
2 Their goal. Was the scorer in an offside position when the ball was played through to his mate. It looked to me like he was. He continued his run and scored. Was that really another phase of play?
3 Our second goal. Bobby was in an offside position. Had he not been there the defender and goalie would have focused on the Ox as soon as Robbo hit the cross.
Please to win. But I like to understand the rules of the sports I watch.
The offsides as I understand the rules If a player goes for the ball and that has an influence on the defenders or GK then he's offside, Firmino goes for the ball, and I would have thought that he got close enough to have an effect on the defender, so should have been given offside. I can only assume the officials thought that he had no influence (we have seen a few of these types on no call in recent weeks) The Palace one is a tough one, he is offside for the I itial ball, he then is offside if he gains an advantage from being in that position, I would say that is the same phase of play personally so he should need to get back onside. I can only assume that as the ball was played backwards to him he doesn't gain an advantage from where he was when the initial ball is played, but I don't think that the officials will consider things in that level of detail. So can only assume it was deemed a seperate phase although not sure how.The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Totally agree though. Our pressing game fell away and what was worse maybe is the timing of our press looked very disjointed.
A player or two were nearly always missing from the press or were reacting that second or two behind the other players pressing and it was leaving gaps right across our lines. Seemed to happen over and over in the second half.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Whether the player is going to reach the ball or not is irrelevant in the laws of the game.
It doesn’t matter, the only question is foul or not.
No idea why Carra hammered on about it so much.
Either way, I think it was totally reachable for Jota had there been no contact. Even if it was at full stretch just to hook the ball back across goal..

Because he is as clueless with regards the rules of the game as he is with regards to anything else to do with the game.
It was a soft peno, but technically it was correct to give it going by the rules of the game.
The exact same situation but involving someone like Grealish, Kane, Mount etc would be getting called "clever play" and it would be quickly pointed out that it was a correct interpretation of the rules of the game.
Went our way this time, so more than happy with it.
Same things goes against us and I will be happy to bitch about it

Jota had no intention of trying to do so, he set off in the wrong direction, towards the keeper to find the contact. Whether other have been given, and far too many have, doesn’t change the fact that it was a nonsense decision imo.Originally posted by Pepe79 View PostWhether the player is going to reach the ball or not is irrelevant in the laws of the game.

Whether he did or didn’t intend to, or whether the ref thinks he did or didn’t, is irrelevant in terms of the decision.Originally posted by Kenneth View PostJota had no intention of trying to do so, he set off in the wrong direction, towards the keeper to find the contact. Whether he ‘found’ the contact or not is subjective.
Jota looks like he makes the most of it, but the contact from the keeper is happening anyway. It’s a soft one imo..

I respectfully disagree. It’s the difference between being fouled by the keeper in normal play and fouling the keeper, which changing direction to run into him would effectively be. Winning a penalty shouldn’t be a thing, but that was a clear example imo.Originally posted by Pepe79 View PostWhether he did or didn’t intend to, or whether the ref thinks he did or didn’t, is irrelevant in terms of the decision.

That’s fine, but just to be clear, it’s the laws of the game that you’re disagreeing with, not my opinion.Originally posted by Kenneth View PostI respectfully disagree.
