This. Love Nat for what he did but he doesn't fit our system at all. Gomez has to come just above him in the pecking order.Experimental music, Metropolitan foodstuffs, Mexican wrestler art, London suburbia, wry whimsy, fansy pants flim flam lad

You're not wrong but I don't think that's the point he's trying to make mate. If Nat comes in and has a stinker we all jump on him but if Gomez comes in and has a stinker then "he needs games". Both players are not good enough to be starters for LFC imo and both players would improve with games but these are the cards we have been dealt. If I had a choice between the two I would pick Gomez because of his pace and because he is better on the ball, certainly not because he is a better defender. I do think his pace covers for the errors that he makes and his piss poor positioning but we are so open and slow in the midfield that we will need all the pace we can get to cover.Originally posted by frank the tank View PostNat doesnt have the tools to play the way we do. The problem we have with Gomez needing games is that he's only ever a very finite number of games away from his next injury. So the more chances he has to get better the closer he is to his next lengthy layoff. That's the Joe paradox.Experimental music, Metropolitan foodstuffs, Mexican wrestler art, London suburbia, wry whimsy, fansy pants flim flam lad

Gomez is definitely not perfect, but he has at least shown he can play - and well - in this system. Nat is more suited to a defence that sits deep. That’s the difference.
We can give Nat as many games as we like but he is not suddenly developing express pace for one of them.
So, given that, we can hope Gomez gets back to where he was with a decent run of games.Modifying post.

There is an argument to say that we should change the way we play for a bit until some of our first teamers are back. Sit deeper with 2 sitting CMs protecting the back 4. That would allow us to play a #10 like carvalho maybe behind Nunez. That would change the argument and put nat in contention.
But klopp ain't going to do that

To my eyes that's kinda what we're already doing? We are much more 4-2-4 in attack now, there's just way too much distance between everyoneOriginally posted by frank the tank View PostThere is an argument to say that we should change the way we play for a bit until some of our first teamers are back. And our defenders play such a high line that we've been undone in each game with a simple ball over them. ...not to mention Elanga's chance hitting the post. Exact same thing.Originally posted by Harv View PostAnd our defenders play such a high line that we've been undone in each game with a simple ball over them. Mitrovic's pen, Zahas goal and then Gashfords
Wide open, one ball and we're done on the counter. Never used to defend like this so I don't know what's changed or why it's happening more now. Trent's been targeted all last season, so it's not even an unusual tactic from the opposition either.

In seasons past our midfield would drop back into deeper positions quicker and reduce the amount of space attackers could counter into, and pretty much help force attackers to go where it suited our defenders.
Watch our opening three games and how often one of our midfielders is off on the right flank tucked in between Mo and Trent. We have three players in the one part of the pitch and a big space in the middle and a big space between the traditional RB and RCM slots.
The RCB is then having to try to cover his own spot, the RB slot and also the gap where the RCM used to drop into in front of the RCB slot.
Trent is getting caught out a lot this season, but the RCM that used to cover Trent when he went forward is not dropping back the way that position used to either.
When we lose players that are very press resistent (Thiago and Keita in particular) or have to field players that are not as mobile as they once were (Henderson and Milner) then whilst minds and hearts may be willing the legs simply are not there to cover in the way they once could.
Stick someone like a settled Laimer in there and sufddenly the RCM slot is able to press, counter press, and has the mobility to move into the spaces proactively and not reactively. Imo for all the above of course.
If anything it is probably making a case for us needing two new CMs (one starter, one fourth choice)I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Part of the issue could be that we are exerting less pressure on the man making the pass, so they have more time to get it right. That is partly because the midfielders we have on the pitch are playing so poorly at the moment.Originally posted by Tribute View Post...not to mention Elanga's chance hitting the post.
