In seasons past our midfield would drop back into deeper positions quicker and reduce the amount of space attackers could counter into, and pretty much help force attackers to go where it suited our defenders.

Watch our opening three games and how often one of our midfielders is off on the right flank tucked in between Mo and Trent. We have three players in the one part of the pitch and a big space in the middle and a big space between the traditional RB and RCM slots.

The RCB is then having to try to cover his own spot, the RB slot and also the gap where the RCM used to drop into in front of the RCB slot.

Trent is getting caught out a lot this season, but the RCM that used to cover Trent when he went forward is not dropping back the way that position used to either.

When we lose players that are very press resistent (Thiago and Keita in particular) or have to field players that are not as mobile as they once were (Henderson and Milner) then whilst minds and hearts may be willing the legs simply are not there to cover in the way they once could.

Stick someone like a settled Laimer in there and sufddenly the RCM slot is able to press, counter press, and has the mobility to move into the spaces proactively and not reactively. Imo for all the above of course.


If anything it is probably making a case for us needing two new CMs (one starter, one fourth choice)

I would say two new CMs is absolutely essential. Obviously we aren't going to bring in two in this window but, one quality CM in this window is vital & could be the difference between a good season and **** creek.
