Gomez is the one I'm most annoyed at. He flips from being a world beater dominant Cb to Sleepy Joe Gomez almost on a weekly basis. I know he's had his injury problems but now it's all in his head. He needs to get focused or go elsewhere.

You’ve got to realise he is only 25 and he’s been part of the back line who won us the league in 2019. He had a run without injuries then which helped get him into shape and match sharpness. At the moment, he doesn’t really have that.

He’s got a challenge on his hands now as he is clearly not at his best, but as stated earlier he is only 25. He’s 4th choice at the moment and we’re lucky to have have 3 high quality centre backs ahead of him.
Phillips is also 25. He's also had zero games and came in and performed straight away, something Gomez never seems to do and is always the same old line of he needs games etcetc when he returns. Phillips also didnt have VVD next to him and still held his own against possibly the best stirker in the league. It's an absolute travesty that someone of his level should be 5th choice. How he hasnt left us is an absolute mystery.

Because he has no pace and can’t pass.

Kelleher was also a big problem for me. Every goal kick was taken short by someone else and immediately led us being pressured by Citys ridiculously high press. We should have been lauching it long to take advantage. Pep got his tactics right as he knew exactly how we would play.

Ironically their keeper doesnt kick well either, but we dont have the legs to press as a unit any more

Also playing so deep means that Phillips lack of pace is not an issue.

Its a shame as he is a fantastic keeper in all other regards

You say that and yet Gomez made more dodgy passes and absolute horrendous crosses. His pace is fine for what he needs, and thats to stop people like Haaland scoring. Which he did.

Yes he is limited. Yes he is nowhere near as technical as Gomez. Yes he is quite slow and does not suit our high line.

But Gomez looks like a liability in there the same way that Lovren was. Phillips looks solid and has not let us down. Id rather have someone dependable that someone who can be great 50% of the time. Personally, I think Gomez is too unrelaible and should be sold, but he just signed a new contract.

I’ve given up on Gomez. He’s lost something from his injuries and it’s not pace. Keeps making ricks and lacks aggression.

None of that means Nat Phillips should be anywhere near our first team. He’s got great qualities but we need defenders with pace to accommodate our high line. Without a high line we can’t press which is vital to the way we play. Defenders like Nat Phillips or Henchoz are fine if you want to play Houllier tactics.

Please bear in mind that our midfield can't cover as well as they once did and our pressing game has gone to **** so to continue to expect us to continue to play such a high line is foolish and leaves us massively vulnerable to the ball over the top and counter attack...
As vvd loses a bit of pace then it makes sense to play to our strengths and not to stubbornly continue to play "klopps" high line tactic.
This then means defenders like Matip and Philips can play a bigger role and suffer less injury as they don't need to make these intensive sprints.

Easy to forget he kept Haaland quiet in October next to VVD. The injury he suffered is a really bad one and who knows if he’ll ever get right back to his best but if he does it’s going to take time.

Phillips is not the answer & never will be. There’s a reason he usually doesn’t get a sniff with us in the first team, he’s game and up for the challenge but being slow, cumbersome with the ball and in general suiting tactics more dreamt up by Big Sam is why he’ll likely spend time on the bench until we can move him on.

So would you rather play someone in there that has a ****up or two in them than someone less taleneted who keeps it more simple? I cant remember him costing us points, despite having to play a deeper line. We played very very deep against City even before he came on.

We need to improve the midfield so I cannot see us bringing in a new defender any time soon.

I hope that Gomez can start showing consistency, but he is 4th choice, and not very good at right back either.

It’s irrelevant, it’s pretty clear JK doesn’t see him as a viable option to how we play; as it stands I don’t really want to see Gomez in the back line either but I think he’s more in the style of player that Klopp wants.

I’d think of VVD, Matip and Konate are fit Gomez will be fourth choice for the foreseeable future. If we can make a few quid from Phillips we’ll sell
