Gravenberch right now doesn't seem to fit a game when the opposition are sitting deep and looking to break. He's way better when the game is open or we're able to break.

Seems to me the best aspects of his game at the moment are based around him surging forward with the ball and there being space in front of him.

Those games are few and far between though. Same applies to Salah and Nunes too, they have speed and thrive on space

Bit of a slog, first half we were very poor. Lacking ideas and very sloppy.

Second half better, we over powered them with our attacking resources but were still fortunate not to concede a second goal when the game was so open.

Bradley was promising, especially in the second half where he became braver and started to attack the opposition defenders instead of just coming backwards and sideways. MOTM shouts are a bit over the top but he was good.

Gomez was generally decent but sloppy in possession too often.

Virgil was sloppy, unlike him, hopefully a one off. Konate very good.

Gravenberch was very poor first half and deservedly got hooked in the second. With that, he always has a goal threat in him.

Curtis Jones, fabulous performance. In a game where we didn’t have Salah, Trent etc, we needed someone to stand up and be the go-to guy, who says “give me the ball, I’ll make something happen for us”. That was Curtis. For a young lad, he played with real maturity and responsibility. His desire to turn the game for us was crucial and yes, there was a bit of luck with the deflection but you get that when you decide you’re going to impact the game - and that’s what he did.

Which brings me to Luis Diaz. I don’t know if it was the injury or the horrid situation with his family, but Diaz is standing still at best. One good game in about five isn’t good enough. In a game like last night when there’s no Salah or Trent, there are people we should be looking to, who will step up and take responsibility. That should be Diaz. He’s 27 in a couple of days, he’s not a kid. He should’ve been one of our go-to men last night but he was ineffectual for the most part. He’s supposed to be in his prime and the performances need to reflect that. If not, I don’t see value in keeping him.

Jota was busy and lively, didn’t get his goal but made things happen and was always willing to take a shot, go on a run etc.

Nice cameo from Gakpo and Darwin. Whatever else we say about Nunez, he’s a livewire and stuff usually happens when he’s out there. Unlucky with his near post effort. Gakpo’s composure is like the antithesis of Darwin’s chaos. They sort of balance each other out. Lovely finish from Cody.

Alexis Mac had a decent game, one horrible pass in the first half where he gave it away very poorly under no pressure…and I’m not sure his set pieces are great, but he didn’t he needed to do.

Finally Kelleher. No issue with him, he is what he is, a backup. If Ali played last night, we keep a clean sheet. Alisson would’ve saved Willian’s shot, without a doubt.


Tricky second leg in store. If we go there with the mentality of winning the game, I feel we’ll go through. If we have a mindset of needing a draw and playing for one, it could end badly for us.

More just the lack of midfielders than wanting him to play in midfield. Or move Harvey into midfield as he didnt offer much on the RW.

Think I would prefer to play Elliot there over Gakpo tbh.

Trying Gakpo on the right could be an option.

I suppose another option when we are short of midfielders (and against a team that we think we would win a shoot out typoe game against) is to go with four in attack.
