The problem with it being called a foul would be that it would have to hold the other way as well, so if a defender blocked a run of an attacking player it would be a freekick/penalty. Could you imagine that if that incident happened the other way round a pen being given? There would be penalties given at nearly every freekick and corner in the league with attacking players throwing themselves to the floor at every opportunity.

The offside is a soft way to allow the goal to be disallowed
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Shielding the ball is allowed, obstructing a player when you’re not near the ball isn’t.
      I don't tip

Here is the rules on obstruction from ifab:

“Obstruction is when a player moves into an opponent's path to block, slow down or force a change of direction when neither player can play the ball. It is not a foul if players are already in each other's space and an accidental collision or contact results”

So because Endo didn’t move into the path of Colwill (he just held his ground) it wouldn’t be deemed a foul.

Right, I think that’s what my point was, about 3 options. They decided it wasn’t interfering enough to be a foul for obstruction, but that it was interfering enough to be ruled offside.

Honest question- when teams strategically have a player standing offside when a free is taken like this, are they trying to get away with breaking the rules, or is it allowed? If it is allowed only if the team get no advantage from it, then why do teams waste a player, doing it?

You are allowed to stand in an offside position if you are not interfering with play, the definition of interfering is determined by the officials so I guess it is a grey area. Years back Big Sam stuck players in an offside position behind the wall in front of the keeper and there was a debate for a while about what they were doing and if they were interfering.

In terms of putting players there I can only really think of two reasons, first being as a blocker or to get in the eyeline of the keeper, the second being a 'marker' for everyone to take their positions from and for the taker to get his aim right

Imo if players start in an offside position at free kicks it should automatically be offside, regardless if they move into an onside position

Not seen this mentioned much, but Elliott was really close to scoring with that header.
