Could say the exact same about most players we have ever signed. Probably grew up supporting different teams and came to us for a big pay day.


TBH when it comes to the business side of things I would prefer if they were the best at what they do rather than being lifelong fans of the club. Less chance of emotional decision making. Leave the real passion to those that are in the stands and that will see the rise, fall and rise of many teams during their lifetimes

Yeah just watching that makes for grim viewing.

Although there are issues with player performance and recruitment it’s hard to not see that the main issue is down to motivation, tactics and coaching.

It also again points to a pick of onfield leadership (think Hendo and Milner).

Increasingly hard to argue against that. Those stats in Carras clip basically back it up. The closer we’ve got to Slots style of play (or the further away we’ve got from Klopps!) the workers we’ve got.

The argument that Slot simply leached off Klopp (or Lijnders, since he was effectively the head coach for past couple of years) overlooks all the significant changes and input that Slot made last season.

He swopped Endo out for Gravenberch as a starter while also changing the latter’s role.

Relieved Salah of his previous amount of off the ball work to help enable his league winning attacking output.

Reined in the Trent midfield inverting thing, which gave the rest of the defence less ground to cover and hugely benefited Konate to hit the heights he reached last season.

Also the amount of times Slot made changes in game to turn the tide and get the result.

How can any of these things be put down to simply riding on the coattails of the previous coaching set up?

Worth noting that those who’ve followed Slot since his Eredivisie days don’t recognise him, his decision making, or whatever he’s attempting tactically this season.

Slot’s performance as head coach has dropped off catastrophically this season, no two ways about it. But in the same way that we don’t reevaluate the performance and contribution of the likes of Salah and Mac Allister last season on account of how bad they’ve been this season. It doesn’t make sense to do so for the head coach either.

last year we had a 4-2-4 shape out of possession that wasn't klopp's and seemed to work ok, although it collapsed into a mid-block which is less fun than watching a gegenpressing team going hammer and tongs.

the new personnel for whatever reason, or some other change has him trying different OOP shapes without settling on one. i think part of that is down to not always having his preferred players in the preferred positions to press the way they did last year either through their own injury or because, for example, DS can't lead the press when he's covering at right back. it does seem like some of the strategy is either a work in progress or simply waiting for players to return, or come in, in the next window. i am one of those who thinks we're in a multi-year recruitment plan and everything's not quite in place for us yet, and it does seem like we're making do, possibly for this reason or some other.

i do get the impression that after the summer we had, expectations were not as high for this season. we saw it at united under SAF more than once after he'd break up a winning team. there'd be a transitional phase, they'd go off the boil, and then they'd be back at the top once they had everything in place. klopp could've done that, i'm not sure arne can.

Probably is but poss ties in with the news Hughes is going, which means Slot loses his biggest allay

I don't particularly trust the source, but it kind of fits in with what I have been saying I think will happen for a while now: that there is a "mutual" parting of ways in the summer whatever happens for the rest of the season. This would be a tidy situation were it true, Slot gets to go home and gets a good job close to his family in a League that is better suited to his style we get a new manager, everything is done on amicable terms and likely there would be no exchange of money, we don't sack him so don't need to pay him off, Ajax don't need to compensate us because he is still under contract, everyone wins.
