Case a) 9th placed team plays 17th place?

Case b) 9th plays 24th place?

Case c) a random draw where 9-16th are on one side and 17-24th are on the other side?


In case a, I’d expect us to play the winner of 16th vs 24th.

In case b, I’d expect us to play the winner of 16th vs 17th.

In case c, I guess there’d just be another draw and with 1 to 8th on one side and the winners of the playoffs on the other.

The more I think about it, I reckon it will be case c, and it will just be a lucky dip who we get. The benefit of finishing top will be that we’d have the second leg at home the whole way, and be guaranteed to be wearing red in the final…

No they haven't made it clear enough. But in a nutshell, the below:

That would be a somewhat sensible way of doing it I guess- but they do say that there will be a draw, so who knows..

Top 8 qualify for the knockouts.

9-24 go into the 2 leg playoffs. 9-16 play 17-24, but there is a draw, it isn’t 9 plays 24. In the draw 9-16 are seeded in that they have the 2nd leg at home.

After the playoffs, in the Round of 16, the Top 8 are drawn against the playoff winners. Top 8 are seeded in the same way to have the second leg at home.

There is no way to map the difference finishing first or 2nd would have for us in terms of how it might affect our opponents.

At least that’s how I’ve interpreted the UEFA website!

this makes it clearer I think. The only draws left are between 2 postions to determine who plays who.

In Theory the whole thing is seeded so its us vs Barca in final if its 1st vs 2nd.
