It didn’t impact anything in the end, but did the ref/var get the rules wrong with that handball/penalty shout? Not talking about whether it was a handball or not, but when he looked and said it wasn’t a penalty, do the rules say the initial decision of a free kick should stick?
For example if the ball goes out for a corner, and then var stops play for a penalty check. They never say it wasn’t a penalty, but seeing as we stopped it anyway, it actually wasn’t a corner so let’s change that to a goal kick…
Or they don’t check for a red card and say no it’s not enough for a red card, but let’s give a yellow…
I know it would have been controversial if var said it was in the box but actually it’s not enough for a penalty, so let’s stick with it being a foul outside the box… it would have been paradoxical, but am I right in saying that’s what the rules say should happen?
