Cody Gakpo reveals “honest” Liverpool squad talks after Anfield “embarrassment”
Cody Gakpo has explained the Liverpool squad had to have “honest” conversations with one another after the “embarrassment” that was the 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.
Liverpool are firmly in the spotlight amid a torrid run of form which, again, reared its head in the first game back from the international break.
Virgil van Dijk was described as ‘shaking with anger‘, and there was a sense that another team meeting would need to take place, and while it was not formal, Gakpo revealed talks have been had.
“I think everybody is aware we have to take responsibility, on the pitch and also off the pitch,” he told reporters on the eve of his former side’s visit to Anfield.
“This was just a conversation you have with a teammate, there was not really a ‘meeting’.
“We are aware of the fact that we have to take responsibility, that we have to do better in certain things on the pitch.
“That’s what we spoke about and obviously we are honest, because otherwise there is no point in speaking.”
While Arne Slot has ‘taken responsibility‘ for Liverpool’s form, there is still an onus on the players to win their duels, make the most of their chances and make life difficult for the opposition.
Anfield will expect a response after Saturday’s “embarrassment,” a word Gakpo did not use lightly. What do you mean it could've been anyone? Name me one person who's got a grudge against penguins

That said most of them need dropping rather than resting anyway

Would not go too weak as PSV have been useful in the CL this season. We should beat them but at the same time we don't need to make ourselves weaker and encourage them.
We do have quality changes we could make with the likes of Chiesa, Ekitike, one from Robertson and Kerkez, Gomez etc all looking like they are available.
If we do decide to play a midfielder at RB, I hope it is Jones and not Szobo and especially not Endo. Jones is decent at RB and it frees up the energy of Szobo in positions where he can have more impact.
If it were my call I would drop/rest both Salah and Gakpo and instead start with a front three of Ekitike, Isak and Chiesa.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

It is a medical situation being managed by professionals.Originally posted by brightred View PostDoes he really?
How do you know that?

We have to go strong tonight as we have Inter & Marseille away in the next two and both could be very tricky. We are in a decent position but a win tonight could give us some breathing room incase we **** up in the away games.
Shaking with anger, taking responsibility, being honest etc sounds great but it is just talk & means **** all if that accountability isn't translated to where it matters, which is on the pitch. We need work rate, controlled aggression & a bit of ****ing passion frankly.

We seem to have a number of issues plaguing us at the moment. One, which might the be easiest to solve, is that our 6 is playing far further up the pitch this season for whatever reason. I'd like to see Grav hold a more disciplined position for the next few games and think that might help with both progression and solidity.
Another issue is how pedestrian we have become with the ball whenever both Salah and Gakpo play. I think we would benefit if one were to be rotated out for a different type of option in the coming games. Wirtz on the left would be great, if he were fit, otherwise Chiesa would be a good option on either flank. If Rio is to be considered a viable option for this squad then now might be a good time to give him some minutes from the start, rather than off the bench when we are chasing the game. All that is without shoehorning a centre forward out wide.
Other than that I think we need to stop being so **** in general. One way of doing that might be to remember how aggressive and clinical we can be. It seems that the team are more reluctant to take risks now which, perversely, results in worse positions occurring than otherwise. Either way, I'm done with this slump now. We need to get over this and get back to humping the living daylights out of the oppos on a regular basis. It's easy to distract fat people. It's a piece of cake.
