Like people say Pennant is lacking confidence. I think this is why he appears to do better when we rest big players as the pressure is lifted to some extent.

People forget that wingers in general don't look great all match. What you want is that when they get an opportunity to attack the wings and take players on they do it. Last night Pennant did that and also slipped in some lovely balls to Bellamy.

I think that playing with Bellamy will help him. A pacy forward on the shoulder of the defender gives him an alternative to taking on his man - namely a through ball inside.

If you want to win the title then you must have players that love to play under pressure and plays better against better teams.

The reason is that to win the title you must win 25+ games in the league and that means that you are under pressure to win more or less every game.

If Pennant doesn't have the right mentality then he will never be good enough for a title winning team.

A player must have both the right mentality and ability.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Thought Pennant had a good game today.

Good through ball in the first half +

Got to the bye line a couple of times +

        Set up the goal.

        Still infuriating at corners!

Overall good and deserves and needs our support

A very pertinant point. I think though you have to allow players a certain period of time to get used to the idea of playing under pressure for a top team. So far I don't think Pennant has been as bad as people make out, but neither has he made a good case for why we should keep him long term if we want to challenge for the league.

I think we should all give him support until the end of the season and then reassess.

Good points, and I agree to an extent but my concern is if you take that approach then there is a danger that you'll never develop players and only accept full internationals playing at the top of their game. You'll become Chelsea, and I for one don't want that.

Now I've never been a Pennant fan so I don't want this to be about me defending him - my point is a general one. To perform well you need confidence, you don't get that by being threatened with the chop.

Didn't think Pennant had a good game last night, and apart from his assist in the last minute - which if we are honest was the last minute of a meaningless game - he'd have been slated.

Doesn't have enough about him to succeed at the highest level.

I must admit that I was impressed with Pennant last night.

He showed pace, dribbling skills, the ability to go past a defender, and most importantly, put some decent crosses in. Why doesn't he show this more often?

If he plays like that most of the time then the Kop will get off his back and will appreciate him a lot more. He's proved he has the ability last night (although it was against a poor side of CL quality) I just wish he could show it more often with LFC.

He's now set a benchmark and must try to produce much of the same from now on.

Why does he look quick sometimes and other times not look in the slightest bit quick?

Why does he have that how 'dare you foul me you dirty fcuker' 'ref, ref, ref' do something about that hecking cnut look about him every time he's fouled?
                          GRRRR

I just don't know what to make of this lad, i can't get them chavvy, ridiculous myspace pictures of his out my head everytime i see him play.
Pennant can be anything he wants to be (on a football pitch), however, I have a feeling that he will be one of those players, huge promise, but never fully delivering. Is it his attitude? Is he more concerned with looking like a chav and getting pissed?

I know I'm being harsh on the lad and he may still come good, but he is yet to convince me. For a so called expert crosser of the ball, too many seem to drift aimlessly into no-mans land. He put in a few killer balls last night, but not nearly enough IMO considering the amount of time he got himself in a good position - this happened even more so in previous games.

He needs time to develope a bit, and I guess only time will tell whether he steps up or whether he goes and plays in Hamburg with Van de Vaart.

Whatever happens, I am sure he will have to fight for his place even harder next season when Rafa splashes the cash on another right winger.

Van Der Vaart is going alright, I think he is one of Hollands best players. I don't understand why people call Pennant a chav though? Surely a chav is someone like Micky Carroll or Wayne Rooney, I have never seen him wear loads of bling and his dress sense is that of a normal 23 year old and he is now rarely in the front pages for doing the wrong thing.
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

Are you watching Manchester United? Are you watching Chelsea? This is Liverpool F.C taking over the bloody world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
