    Raul Meireles

Has selling him worked out for us?

Would keeping him have helped our midfield this year in light of injuries to Gerrard and Lucas (not the same sort of player I know but CM has been heavily impacted by those 2 being out).

Has he done alright for Chelsea? He seems to be keeping Lampsy out of the team atm so he must be doing something right.

    Discuss.
    Oh I don't know.

No selling him hasn't worked out for us but he didn't exactly give us much choice.

We should've replaced him in January though.

He was **** last night and whenever I have seen him play for the Chavs he has looked distinctly average IMO. Dont think we miss him in the slightest. It has also allowed younger players Henderson and Spearing more game time as well.

i'm am not just saying this because he is struggling

but i was always meh about meireles anyway - I felt he was, what i called him very early on in his LFC career, a powder puff player -

i have no idea what that means , but it's the only way I can describe.

I can see why we sold him, he'd not had a 'massive' impact, we got offered a decent amount for him and we took it....had he stayed, for all we know, lucas would have stayed fit, adam/henderson/downing all settled a bit quicker and meireles may have only played say 20 games, and we would have sold him this summer for half of what we recieved,

that said though, being greedy, you want as many decent players/options in your squad as possible and i would have had no complaints if he had stayed either.

so to sum up meh....I don;t think we have missed too much, but had he stayed he would have given us an extra option for sure.

according to wiki, undisclosed thought to be in the region of £12m

                decent bit of business imo.

I'm pretty confident Meireles wouldn't have helped cover for Lucas - his tracking for Napoli's first goal last night was hilarious for all but Chelsea. However, whilst technically he could have covered for Gerrard, I think a midfield of Spearing, Adam and Meireles would been weak in so many departments.

I rated him, thought he linked up really well with Suarez and had a good eye for a pass.

Completely spineless in the tackle though.

Didn't we get £12million for him?

You could argue that we have missed his purple patch of goals, but in reality - if we'd been more prolific in front of goal and converted our chances, we wouldn't even be talking about the only thing that he brought to our team.

                        - exactly - had downing/carroll/henderson all produced a bit more than they have, then we wouldn't have even noticed merieles had gone...

and it was just a bit of purple patch of scoring goals at important times for us....

he wouldn't have given us the centre mid i have felt we needed from last summer (a top box to box centre mid) and for all we know had he stayed he might have only scored 1 goal and we'd be saying "****ing hell, we should have took that £12m for him that chelsea offered"

I don't think Meireles is all that good or LFC quality.

Seems to me that people seem to remember his four or five goals last season (which were important goals in fairness), but he didn't really do that much. History shows that he rarely scored goals either. In his defence he was stuck out wide for Hodgson on occasion but what did he really do? He had an okay pass and an okay engine but he never excelled at anything.

I'm not going to compare him to Adam or Spearing because I'm not sure if they're LFC quality either. Well, maybe as squad players.

We were never going to get offered that sort of money for him again either so we sold at the right time.

The midfielder last season who we should've kept is Aquilani ffs.

He's absolutely despised by their supporters which is nice. He's alright, certainly wouldnt have helped any problems in central midfield as he quite clearly cant play there, would have had some good games out wide, some disappearing acts. We got a great deal really.

just to put a bit of perspective to it...

                              his stats from wiki

                              333 games - 27 goals - 40 assists - thats all competitions!!!!

19 of those goals and 30 of those assists came from his 191 games over 6 seasons at Porto

He has never scored more than 5 in a season! (once for Porto and us)

His 'best' season was 2008 at Porto, scored 5 and assisted 12
