Hmm people say that without appreciating the difference between playing in the uber-side of German football and Liverpool scrapping with all around them.

Alonso sitting in front of our defence would make them better, he'd also make Hendo and Can better....and yep, he'd make the forwards better.

He's one of those rare players that just makes the game easier for everyone else. He's so astute tactically and his passing is second to none.

A gentleman and one of the best players I've seen in a Liverpool shirt over the last thirty-odd years.

Hard to believe, given the sums of money in the game now, that he was available for only 18M that summer and no one snapped him up.

        Gareth Barry ...

when you look at Gerrard and Alonso and the likes of Mascerano, Hamman, and compare to what we have now, it becomes apparent just why we're sat where we are.

Such a poor squad now in comparison. Lets not kid ourselves, we're absolutely miles behind the best in Europe these days.

That's an exacerbating issue not a mitigating one!
              3rd place. Worst champions ever.

Gareth ****ing Barry. I also loved Benitez, still do, but that is insanity

It feels like destiny....and maybe he will get a chance to go on that open top bus parade in the city...

I love Xabi more than is healthy but he did have a fairly poor season before and we were up **** street financially.

Not an excuse but a mitigation maybe.

Yeah, I feel the same about him. Love the guy, but his time with us was very up and down. I remember his first and last seasons being barnstormers. But everything in between was mediocre.

Mind you, maybe its just me trying to remember all the bad things about the girlfriend that dumped me

He definitely went up a level or two in his final season with us. He did have relatively mediocre seasons prior to that.

He was playing for the transfer.

Not quite sure he was playing for the transfer, I won't discount it though, but didn't he break his ankle/foot the previous season when Fat Frank done him?
