Turned out better for us that he turned us down. If he had come to us it’s inevitable that he would have been fluttering his eyelashes at Real as soon as his stock was high. Instead we win the league with Arne and I’m not sure what other job would tempt him away from us.

      Rafa managed Madrid too...

It's funny actually, how with all the noise about Trent, and the McManaman / Owen traitor talk, how Alonso is barely mentioned in those terms. Everyone loves him.
      Oh I don't know.

Looking at some of the names mentioned on this page as possible candidates last year. Good grief

        Well done red g though.

We got decent money for him and he wasn’t from our youth team.

I just looked it up and according to Wikipedia we got £30m for him. I don't remember it being anything like that.

The Madrid thing has always stuck in the throat though.

Yes it was more than I thought too.
I try not to hold anything against foreign players who push to leave having done the business for us.

Surely Alonso was pushed first, which is the major difference?
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Yeah think it was Gareth Barry that Rafa wanted to bring in, with Almoso being sold to fund that move.

Recall something about Rafa not being happy that Alonso put being present for Xabi's wife giving birth over playing in a CL (I think) game.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

They bought Ronaldo, Kaka, Alonso and Benzema that summer as well
