Thanjk you.

Correct. Unpopular I know, but look at the evidence of who he signed afterwards for both Liverpool and Blackburn and then LFC again when he had his second go. Yes I realise that Hillsborough affected his judgement, but he clearly likes the big man up front and crosses into the box. I just don't believe he signed these players all on his own... Now ready for pelters...
He is one of my heroes btw..
I'm not saying that you are wrong but I don't think that you can look at the signings he made here or at Blackburn and compare them with us the first time around without taking the very different situations of the club's at the time(s) into account. He tried to sign some good players at Blackburn there's the infamous Zidane signing which Jack walker supposedly said why do we need Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

On the one hand you may have a point on the other he doesn't strike me as the sort of person who wouldn't want his own way (on any signing).
And Barnes /Aldridge does fulfill the winger/ target man that you suggest. (I know you said big but Aldo wasn't especially big but still played the target man role fairly effectively).

He didn't do much else in an England shirt though.
Was always amazing for us (until he got old and dropped into midfield) but always mainly under performed for England. Probably because the ****s were booing him.

One of my favourite ever players.
The press absolutely hounded him for not scoring that goal again, he was Englands whipping boy for his entire career.
He never replicated 'that' goal but I think he was a solid if not stellar performer.

Bob certainly didnt recommend signing Aldridge as he slaughtered him as "not a Liverpool signing" shortly after he joined
Bob Paisley - "This club has been my life. I'd go out and sweep the street and be proud to do it for Liverpool if they asked me to."

How many LFC players in the 70's & 80's ever did well for their national teams??
Very few imo, it was probably because the national teams played totally different football
I have just read a book about Paisley and one of the things was Ron Greenwood asking bob Paisley how players from LFC couldnt transfer club form to international level
Bob's reply was to tell Ron to change the system and style of play and pick more LFC players because the other clubs players couldnt pass

England have a history of not getting the goods out of great players in the last couple of decades though.
McManaman never really played well over a sustained period for England. Not to the heights that got him a bozzy to Real Madrid anyway.
Players like Fowler and Ian Wright didn't get a fraction of the caps that they should have. Same with Carrick. And Le Tissier. Steve Bruce captained Man United to titles and formed a good partnership with Pallister but never even got a cap. They had a 10 year debate of "could Gerrard and Lampard play in the same central midfield with each other" while the rest of the world pissed themselves laughing at Scholes on the left wing!!
Dont think there is anyone who possesses what he did
He was very quick over the first few yards and could beat defenders by pace alone
He also had great feet and could beat defenders just by skill
He was also immensely strong, I dont think there is anyone in football now who is as strong as he was.
Good in the air, great delivery and good at set pieces
In fact I think Fat Ronaldo is the nearest I have seen to him in terms of pace, power, strength and skill and its a fair few years since he graced a pitch also
Good shout, I racked my brain and struggle to find a player who has the same skill set and impact as him. Ronaldo was obviously a CF and Barnes a classic winger (early days) but they way they dribbled using pace, power and technique is v similar.
He had Figo's direct running, shooting and ball control, but was far more explosive and dynamic. Beating players was effortless - you don't see that very often and when you do, it absolutely sticks with you.
