There's obviously some long term problems with Gerrard's fitness he needs to be very carefully managed which means him saying goodbye to England.

Certainly in the short term. Most players want to win as much as they can before they retire and deluded or not I think English players think that England offers a route to doing that. It's a bit of a double edged sword - big tournaments can help provide players with a motivation to excel but the added matches in qualification and certainly friendlies are clearly unhelpful for players with injury issues.
