I'm not convinced that the argument follows. It is possible but we have all seen players fail to step up from great performances in a weak team to fail to make good ones at a top team. I'm not saying that Gerrard would not have stepped up but it is unknowable. That said no one, at least on this board, doubts that Gerrard is one of the better players in the world.
I honestly believe that Gerrard is THE best player in the world because of his all-round skills, there is little he can't do, defend, tackle, shoot, pass etc he technically outstanding in all aspects of the game and a superb athlete.

Xabi, Messi et al are superb at certain aspects of the game but weaker at others, this stops them being number one in my book.

Using stats alone may not enough (though it is required to get into quantitative side of argument) and playing in different roles is relevant but I have seen them both play many, many times to know that they are both great passers but I do think that Stevie's ability to pick a player has never been given as much recognition as he deserves.

In terms of his stepping up at a top team yes we will never know but he is too good of a player that excelled at levels from the club to national team and to me there is no good reason to think that he wouldn't have done the same at Barca or Real if he had the chance to play there.

You may see him as a one of the better players in the world, to me he was one of the best players in the world in his position and it is shame that he never had the team around him to elevate his game even more.

Compare Xabi to Xavi, Not Gerrard. Both are worlds apart as to the type of players they are. Gerrard is better then anyone in the role he plays. Nearly a Decade ago ( I know along time ago) I would have said Kaka was up there. But now Kaka does not even come close. Thats how good Gerrard has been on a regular basis.

So, Gerrard needs to be starting tonight, i hope he's fit enough to play 90.
I don't think Gerrard will play 90 mins, I think he may start on the bench and come on for the 2nd half, or if he starts I don't think he'll be on for much more than an hour.

Xabi Alonso's stats are a good example of this.

Gerrard and Kaka is a fair comparison I'd say.

For Gerrard to still play to the level he can after all his injury problems is absolutely phenomenal. It was like a pro footballer playing five a side with the pub team when he came on against Newcastle, what a player he is.

                    4 starts, 4 goals. Gerrard's back.

Lets hope he continues this trend and stays injury free for the rest of the season.

He is looking in the best shape ever.Lean and mean with that moody unshaven look.Almost Alonso'esque in his last year for us.

And he looks to really want to make up for lost time.He seems hungry to succeed again.

I just can't wait for him and Suraez playing together.
