Just the ol' getting a relatively basic refereeing rule wrong that could have cost a team going for promotion three points, which might have derailed their whole season....

So. The latest big sporting social media outrage erupted on Wednesday evening when referee Keith Stroud awarded Burton a free-kick after Newcastle's Matt Ritchie had his penalty disallowed for encroachment by team-mate Dwight Gayle.

Sadly for Stroud, the rules state that if the attacking team does encroach the box as the ball finds the net then the kick is retaken.

In simple terms he got it wrong and apologised for the mistake.

Luckily for Keith, the Championship leaders won.

Thinks that's a bit of an over simplification. He had a 29m profit window whilst rebuilding. And they're hardly struggling, 1 point off top, 4 points above 3rd with a game in hand.

I presume he expected that Newcastle, having been relegated, would be desperate / more open to letting him fix things, and you would think a championship side would be more than willing to do so for a top class manager.
