Barcelona striker Luis Suarez claims Liverpool would never have mounted their unexpected title challenge last season without him.
The Uruguay international scored 31 Premier League goals as the Reds finished runners-up to Manchester City and insists he left Anfield a happy man this summer, when a £75million deal took him to the Nou Camp.
That contrasted sharply with his feelings at the start of his final campaign in England, for which he was suspended as he was still serving some of his 10-game ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic, and he was made to train on his own after trying to manufacture a move away.
While he was serving the remainder of his ban Liverpool picked up 10 points out of a possible 15 but having been reintegrated into the squad the striker returned with 19 goals in his first 12 league appearances as the Reds gathered increasing momentum on their way to second place.
"Personal success is always welcome and makes you happy, because that's recognition of the good work you have done," said Suarez, who is due to receive the Golden Shoe for being Europe's joint-leading scorer from Liverpool icon Kenny Dalglish in Barcelona this week.
"But I put the team ahead of that and last season Liverpool came so close to winning the Premier League, which would have been spectacular."
Suarez added on fcbarcelona.com: "I appreciate all the work the team did but I missed six matches and scored all those goals in the Premier League without being the penalty-taker.
"The truth is that I left very happy because if I hadn't had the attitude and mentality to want to lead the team forward, I don't think Liverpool would have done as well as they did either.
"Getting back into the Champions League was another target I had in mind."

Luis Suarez has backed Brendan Rodgers to bring success to Liverpool FC – and has heralded his former captain Steven Gerrard as an “inspiration”.
The Uruguayan moved to Barcelona this summer in a £75m deal and is set to make his first team debut for the Catalan giants against Real Madrid on October 25 following the end of his four-month ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini.
But the striker has been reflecting on his time on Merseyside, and predicts big things for the Reds under Rodgers.
“Brendan Rodgers has great ideas,” he told Shortlist magazine. “I said when I left the club that I was leaving them in good hands, and I am sure he will be even more successful than he has been.”
The 27-year-old scored 31 league goals for Liverpool last season and was voted PFA Player of the Year – but Suarez reserved special praise for Gerrard, saying he wish he could have taken his former captain to Camp Nou.
“I don’t think the fans would have been happy if I had taken their players, but every team could use Steven Gerrard,” he added.
“He is such a leader, such an inspiration – Liverpool are very fortunate to have had him for his entire career.”
Suarez was recently quoted in Barcelona’s club magazine saying the Reds’ 2013/14 success was largely down to him, but he has also spoken of his fondness for Liverpool both as a club and city.
“I have said Liverpool will be in my heart, so now I will watch them,” said Suarez.
“I already knew Barcelona well as a city – my wife has a family over here and that was a factor in our decision.
“Liverpool will always be a city in my heart, so now I will watch them.
“The Liverpool fans and the city itself will both always be with me in my heart [but] I won’t miss the media.”
He also revealed his favourite goal during his time at Anfield was his strike from the halfway line against Norwich at Carrow Road in April 2012.
“It was a great goal for me, but also it was my first hat-trick for Liverpool, so it was a great occasion as well,” he said.
Suarez has not played since Uruguay’s 1-0 win over Italy at the World Cup – the game when he bit defender Chiellini.
It soured what had been a magnificent World Cup until that point, with Suarez scoring twice to beat England 2-1 in Sao Paolo.
“Roy Hodgson did not want to acknowledge that I was a top player, so I did feel like I had something to prove. I was not even close to being fully fit when I played against England, but I was still able to answer the critics,” said Suarez.
“I do not want to miss any football, and I will make sure that will not be happening.”Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

I can't stay mad at him for long, though I want to!

Luis lad, this is already happening and it will happen again either later this season when Ramos pinches the back of your neck for the 15th time or next season. I'd say deal with it but this is your achilles heel and everyone knows now.One tit for another.

To be fair, that was hilarious. Even though it looked like he was heading off that summer, it was so bloody funny. It soured what had been a magnificent World Cup until that point, with Suarez scoring twice to beat England 2-1 in Sao Paolo.

sad as I was that he scored a couple against us, that image of Woy being deflated was worth all the pain. Can't stand the man and hope he brings English football to its knees... The recent Sturridge and Sterling incidents are just more evidence of how out of touch he is with modern football.
Suarez on the other hand, biting aside, is a genuinely likeable chap. I miss his goals, but the increasing amount of baggage that came with him would have haunted us for years and years and years...
