Since we have the big lad here and no one else right now, is it beyond the realms to think we could try and adapt our system to try and get more out of him? I like klopp a lot, but his approach seems very similar to Rodgers. One up front, lots of pressing and counter attacking. It didn't suit Carrol, Mario, Lambert and now Benteke. These are all strikers that suit crosses, partners and a different attacking approach. In the past managers seemed to play different ways to utilise what they had. Now days, managers seem very stuck in their ways and stubborn. That's not just us, that's across the whole of football. I get you need an ideology and preferred method, but sometimes you need to be prepared to go against this if you don't have the players you want.

He doesn't make enough runs into the box to even make that worthwhile, the big lazy lampost.

It would be interesting to see how his runs and positioning compares between his time with us and Villa. He always seemed to be involved in the limited number of times they got in and around the box, for us as people have been saying he often seems to be too far from the action.

Some of his movement to find space when he actually gets in dangerous areas still seems good to me.

I dont think we put in enough personally

That said he isnt in the box enough (just like Balotelli) and he doesnt attack the ball as often as he should when he is in it

You can see hes effective when the stars align (we cross, hes in the box and he attacks it) but those things dont happen anywhere near enough for him to be the type of player that we should build our game around

One thing that strikes me about Benteke is when you look at the Southampton League Cup game

Origi showed us what even a half decent forward with a bit of desire can achieve

He ran the channels well, ran beyond their defence, attacked the ball in the box and he actually ran at their defence when he got it deep and he showed a great work rate off the ball

We dont get any of that from Benteke and its why for me when the others are fit hes nothing more than a 4th choice forward
