    2 wins, 6pts, 2 cleansheets.......pah !

Here's Martin Keown putting that record back in its box

Jurgen Klopp ‘is not fully convinced’ by Liverpool’s new central defensive partnership, according to Martin Keown.

Liverpool are the only Premier League side to start the season with two clean sheets, beating both West Ham and Crystal Palace to nil.

The arrival of Alisson for a then-world-record fee for a goalkeeper has engendered an improvement in defence, but a new pairing at centre-half has also helped.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have started the season together due to injuries to Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip, and both have impressed.

Keown feels ‘they have the potential to become one of the greatest pairings the Premier League has ever seen.’

The pundit added, in his Daily Mail column, that Van Dijk and Gomez ‘have the attributes’ to deal with any forward.

But he has expressed doubts as to whether Klopp is ‘fully convinced’ by the pairing just yet.

‘When Palace had a goal kick on Monday night, Benteke would stand on Gomez,’ Keown said.

‘Rather than let him deal with the striker, Van Dijk – who is two inches taller than his partner – would come across to head the ball away.

‘I was two inches shorter than Tony Adams but backed myself to win every header that came my way.

‘It would have been Klopp’s call to put Van Dijk on Benteke but he must be careful not to damage Gomez’s confidence.’
Long story short, Martin feels VVD shouldn't attack the ball when he's capable of doing so. You can understand now why he's so sought after in the managerial recruitment world.

      Long story shorter, Keown's opinion = non-story.

Is the manager fully convinced by a CB pairing who have played 2 games together? Of course not that's natural there is still a lot of work to do.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I think most managers would put VVD on Benteke in that situation?
            * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

It makes more sense to have gomez cover benteke, with vvd standing ff to intercept balls and sweep any 2nd balls.
Also stops vvd being dragged out of position should the attacker be intelligent and mobile enough, not benteke obviously.

You want your best header of the ball on Benteke with Gomez sweeping up, why risk losing the first ball ? Hines is quick and more than capable of sweeping up anything that’s not been won.

Klopp basing the tactics on what Adams and Keown might have done if they are still playing doesn't make much sense.

"ok, Joe, you be Martin Keown - he heads everything btw, Virgil, you play like a sober Tony Adams- he does the same".
