    Whelan was probably the most underrated midfielder I have ever seen. He won more possession than any other player we had on the pitch and covered so much ground.

        Our midfield displays in the last 2 games are even more impressive with him being "anonymous". Dominated Leicester for 80mins and Spurs for about 70 (and such was the domination of Spurs they made a sub first half). Not bad, he's not been amazing but anonymous is utter drivel. 2 assists too.

          Well he's not there yet, for sure. But given the comments on here I watched him closely all game and he was really useful on the ball.

          Watch the run he makes for Lallanas goal and tell me he's not going to be a decent player.

          Yes, I think he need to do more, and get on the ball even more. But his ability to keep the team moving and pass the ball on in tight areas is good. I think he will be a good signing he played well yesterday.

                Going to be interesting how we get Can and Coutinho into that team. I wouldn't want to change the front four so it would be Gini and Henderson missing out with Can in the centre and Phil and Lallana either side. The worry is we would be even more lightweight in the midfield with both of them in it.

                      I don't get why people seize on comments like this. Saying someone is 'like' a certain player (Whelan, Gerrard etc) does not mean they are as good as them.

                      It means they have a similar playing style or role.

                        What will be interesting is what games suit certain players. We can't get 15 players on the pitch and our opposition will set up and play differently too.

                            I think Wijnaldum could be very good squad player in the end, he can play almost everywhere in midfield so he'll get games and we have a good backup for most players. He's also getting better in CM but I think he'd be better further forward or as a part of a midfield three.
